If you buy GCs when they are not on promotion, you get no gas points. Zero, Zero, Zero. NOT 1X.

Current GC Promotion: None (so you will get zero gas points for buying Amex, Visa, or MC gift cards)

Stop & Shop (S&S) and Giant Food Stores (Giant) offer points for purchases which can be redeemed for discounts off gas purchases at select gas stations. The rules are different depending on whether you shop at S&S or Giant and within the Giant chain, the rules vary by your location.

Feel free to update this Wiki or suggest improvements. The goal is to help all of us spend less on gas!

IMPORTANT: Giant Food Stores, LLC and Giant of Maryland, LLC are different chains and the rules are different for redemption! For a great explanation of why they are different read Post #839.

FAQs

You need to obtain a Rewards card at the Customer Service desk before you can start getting gas rewards.

Cards that work are listed in the current circular. They do change occasionally. VISA and MC from Metabank or US Bank for $20-$500 (plus $5.95 fee) work. For GCs, if it meets the previous requirements, the packaging (blue, silver, birthday cake, etc.) doesn't matter! Check the issuing bank.

S&S and Giant (NoVA, DC, MD) allows you to redeem gas points only up to $2.20/gallon and points expire after 30 days. Giant PA can redeem full amount.

Points earned in one program cannot be used in another program, BUT there are reports that you can call Customer Service and x-fer points to the other programs. See post #512

S&S allows you to fill up more than once per day.

Giant may ask for your name and driver's license to write in a book if you make a certain level of purchases. Some stores it is for >$2k and some for $5k. YMMV.

You can access your Giant Gas Rewards online using the link at the top of the thread.

Most people report they can buy a single $500 MC or VISA at any register without an issue. Generally, if you spend more than $1,000 a manager will be required to come over to the register with a key. It's not been reported that this is an issue, just to be aware if the register is busy. You can go checkout at Customer Service to avoid this hassle.

Giant Eagle (Pittsburgh area) is not the same as Giant Food Stores and this deal doesn't work.

If you have more points than are required for your redemption they will remain in your account until they expire. i.e. If you have 10,000 points and you redeem 2,200 for a fillup, you will have 7,800 points left in your account.

If your bonus card is not scanned with your gift card purchase because of a system or cashier mistake, you can get the points manually added at the cust. svc desk at your local store. Show your receipt, and the employee may need reference to the gift card promo in the Giant sales flyer. It generally takes manually added points 24 hrs to post to your account.
[*]How do gas rewards work when gas is less than $2.20 (based on NoVA Shell stations)?

Giant deducts 2200 points from your account (usually) wishing 24 hours of your gas purchase. In the next 24-48 hours, Giant credits your account for the different between the actual gas price reduction and the 2209 points. Example: 1.999 gas has recently required (late Dec 2015/Jan 2016) paying $0.019 per gallon. Giant deducts 2200 points and then credits 220 ( 2.20 - 1.98; gas price adjusts down to account for the price you paid). The credited points get a new 30 days from starting in the credit date. This has been the case at three different Shell stations in NoVA using inside and pay at the pump. YMMV.

Thats the case at Giant, in NY/NY its SnS where the max benefit at any 1 fill up is using 2200 pts to take $2.20 off per gal. Filling in NYC will mean paying apx $.30 - .50 per gal over what its reduced by.So 3 GCs = 3000 pts of which only 2200 can be used at any 1 time Or buy 2 and get $2 off per gal

In most cases its still better then nothing but its a far cry from being a truly free fill-up. True those using a CB CC will gain alittle more. But as I added above you need to add in the additional $2 per GC over the $3.95 GCs you could have purchased and still earned the same CB or miles or pts. So that $15 is now $21 those that fill up more then 1 car at a time for sure get a sweeter deal, since they will max out the # of gals allowed @ -$2.20

Gas points posted as expected when buying the Visa cards today. The store in Medford MA (Salem St) still had some cards left after I got mine.

Gas reward S&S

the point of all these posts forget the main reason for buying these meata GC. in the first place. You are going to buy them anyway to get the points/miles. I use a combo pf ABCP/Penfed/CCredit Union. So the fees for the cards are paid by me anyway. Any additional benefit in addition to CB/points are graciously accepted. In my parts, the Shell gas would cost about 15-20 cents/gallon.

So gas in my neck of the woods is currently averaging about $2.20/gallon -- the maximum discount under the Stop&Shop/Giant MD program. What happens if the gas price is $2.199? Will the "computer" deduct 2200 points and charge me nothing: or will it only deduct 2000 points and charge me .199/gallon? If so, I'll want to find the station that's still slightly above $2.20 per gallon.

Does anyone know? It's a "problem" we haven't previously experienced because this is the first time gas has been this cheap under the promo.

Weird you say that. So I didn't wait for a response to my earlier question (we were running out of gas!). I went to a convenient station where it was the "excessive" price of $2.299. It deducted the 2200 gas points, but charged me .109.

I see a class action coming. Perhaps somebody will first harangue the clerk for their 35 cents.

yup looks like this is the minimum. I should have only paid .039 but they forced me to pay .109.

Cost 1.50 to fill up

Did anyone buy under 2k of cards at a S&S and still get asked for your license for the log book? I got 3 at a local store and was told they had to log all purchased of 1k or more now instead of 2k.

Despite the signs that hang in these stores that reasonably explain the policy, I have encountered very inconsistent applications from store to store. I have one store where I can buy $3K and they don't bat an eye or pull out the book; in another they do it for anything $1K or more; in still another, they will do it if the the cashier remembers me from earlier in the week, even if both purchases were only $1K. On top of this, there is variance based upon the employee. One manager insists he can't sell more than $1500 at a time (despite the sign being prominently displayed right behind him).

Even though there is a corp. policy I'm sure stores have a right to do whatever they want (as long as they still comply)

Had a weird thing happen today when filling up. The cash price was $2.159, credit was $2.259. Thinking it will automatically be $0.109 like last time, tried cash first and the price went to $0 and wouldn't pump. The midgrade and premium reflected the discount, but didn't want to pay that price. So, I told the attendant to cancel the transaction and start over with CC. It charged $0.059 per gallon. Lowest I've ever paid for gas.

I'm wondering if anyone had success in paying nothing. That'd be cool.
