Wow, I hadn't even thought that GCs would be allowed since most places don't. I have $6K left of AGCs I've been working on unloading since the Giant gas rewards deal two weeks ago. Time to stock back up on OVs so this is good to know. I'm gonna hit the MO spots hard this weekend since the SO is out of town and I've got nothing to do. Then all I've got to do next week is deposit them in my accounts.

Thanks, I did this today. Tried at a few different stores too. CVS was a breeze other than the time it took the cashier to put in my license info. Does it work the same at WG?

Cool beans. So you didn't need my advice anyways :-) and I have no idea about WG. Never tried.

Using GCs at CVs is 100% YMMV. Some stores and cashiers care and they check to make sure that your name is on the credit card you use. Others don't. You just have to try. If they say no, thank them, walk out, and drive to the next CVS.

Figured as much but since I usually do $4K-$5K per trip to CVS I never even would had tried because I wouldn't have wanted to draw any more attention to myself than I needed to by asking them to manually split tender. If it does it automatically it's less conspicuous. Guess we'll see what happens tomorrow. I'll try $1K in AGCs at each CVS in my area and see how it goes. That way I'm only doing three swipes. One for each OV and the fees on my Blue. Might as well save 49 cents on the fees at least. :D

WG register is much simple and smart than CVS one... No DL check. No last 4 digits needed. Even no signature needed for small charges.

Good luck finding a WG that'll consistently sell you over $500 at a time. I have a few that will, but others it varies from day to day whether the cashier will tell you $500 max or not. Because of this I never ask for more than $1000 in a visit. Lately I only go to WG because I need more than $6K in purchases in a single day or they're running some kind of promotion.

I have not tried WG yet to purchase OV but i tried CVS and rite Aid; and it really varies by cashier, some wouldn't sell over $500 others had $1000 limit and others didn't allow OV on a CC at all, so i do $500 per store to keep it easy, i am only working on a couple of cards so its not that hard to hit the Spending goal.

I had an interesting version of this the other day where the CVS employee was willing to sell my two OVs but only if I was willing to do two separate transactions. She said something about a maximum. I said just said that would work and thanked her and had no other issues. I'd never seen her before, and this was at the CVS closest to my house.

I bought two VGCs at CVS today to meet the spend requirement for a Citi HHonors Visa and the clerk asked me if I bought MOs with them. I said yes and he asked "At Walmart?" I nodded and he told me he tried and they wouldn't let him do it. I told him I was just there this morning and it worked fine, but it turned out he tried at the west side WM. The one on the south side is the good one, and I told him that.

One more person dipping his toe in the waters here in Madison.

If the clerks are getting in on the OV fun too I might be worried about finding gift cards in stock! :D

You should be more worried when LP gets involved.

Their rack is always loaded with VGCs when I come in. They have OVs, too. I suppose if one of them went all-out it would make a dent, but that seems unlikely.

When VRs still worked, I heard one of the clerks tell another that he saved a pack of them for his friend, so they seem pretty familiar with MS at this store. Most of the clerks don't bother asking how much I want to load.

Yeah, my local clerks all knew what was up back in the VR days. I haven't been doing CVS lately for MS since I've found another local cheaper source for VGC. Hopefully if that source ever dries up the CVS clerks will have had enough people buying OV not to try the cash only line.

This is something new at my local CVS. Since, yesterday the Cashier started to write down my name & DL number on a white paper, along with scanning the DL for more than $1K purchases. Not sure any one else has experienced this.

Yesterday, I asked him, is this a new policy? He said, his manager instructed him to get some info about GC purchasers.

As long as it's only the name & DL number captured, that's no further information than the DL scan, right? I'd be uncomfortable if they started copying address and DOB (I don't know if the scan captures DOB too?) information out of identity theft concerns.

Yes he just took only name and DL#. I don't know what he is doing with this. I just assume that He puts this info in some file with a note saying customer purchased GC today.

Also I am not sure what all the info CVS systems get's after the DL scan. But I have read that if you scan your DL to get Target Amex, All of your info, DL#, DOB, Address, Name will appear on the screen. This gives me an impression that, all these info can be captured by just a scan.
