MHUpgrade is MH's implementation of Plusgrade's bid on an upgrade platform.
  • You can check if your itinerary is eligible for bidding on an upgrade (most are) on MH's website here, but it typically takes 24-48 hours after the ticket is issued for the itinerary to be in Plusgrade's system
  • You cannot bid for flights departing within 72 hours
  • Minimum bids are dynamically set based on various factors, and don't appear to change as you get closer to flight departure
  • Tip: If you're bidding the minimum, you should consider making the bid in USD unless bidding in your home currency avoids credit card costs that are higher than the difference in pricing (see this post)
  • Bid amounts can be changed or withdrawn up to 72 hours from flight departure. It does not appear that you can update the credit card number
  • Accepted bids will be processed within the 72 hours window, generally prior to 48 hours to departure
  • If your bid is accepted:
    • The credit card will be charged
    • You will be rebooked in "I" class for business class, "P" class for first class
    • You will receive an email notification from Plusgrade
    • You will receive an email with your new eTicket from the airline
  • Within MH Enrich, mileage accrual is based on the fare class on your original ticket. For partner programs, without manual intervention, your mileage accrual is based on the class you've been rebooked into, not the one from your original ticket. Retro claims based on original booking may be required, it is unclear yet if they will be accepted or not.
    • Note that "I" earns nothing, including no segment credits or tier points (it's as if you never took the flight) on AA, BA, CX, and probably other carriers (check your program's information), so from a frequent flyer standpoint you might end up worse off
    • There are multiple reports from multiple users in this thread that mileage on partner programs (BA) will be credited based on the earning rates (if any) from original booking class, following manual intervention/claim.
  • Please read MH's FAQs

03DEC MH608 SIN-KUL; Min Bid SGD 85; My Bid SGD 85; Unsuccessful; J cabin looks full.

Notification email came at T-22, a bit late it seems but I guess an effect of the peak period.

It would be also much more compelling to bid if the new booking class was listed in other OW carrier.

Not really worth it for such a short flight.

You are right, I'm not feeling bummed about this one

However, what's making me jumpy now is that I haven't received any confirmation email for the onward KUL-ICN leg (tonight's flight--it's only T-9 now!), although my card had been charged two days ago my exact bid amount. Guess I'll find out when I head to the check-in desk in a couple hours..!

edit:

03DEC MH66 KUL-ICN; min bid 305SGD; my bid 315SGD; unsuccessful; 4 empty seats in J

I only received the rejection email about 3 hours after the flight arrived in ICN. It looks like the bid was just allowed to lapse. Going to have to ask them about reversing the charge...

On the bright side, I had seats 9A and 9C (new A333 layout, the "private Y cabin" just aft of J) all to myself and it was a really enjoyable flight despite not scoring the upgrade!

It can be worth it just to be able to skip the dreadful immigration queues at KLIA if you're travelling at peak times.

(My luck is such, however, that the queues are never there on the odd occasion that I do upgrade. ;-) )

Ooh, nice data point. I'm flying KUL-ICN on the 20th and have put in a 350sgd bid, looks like it's pretty unlikely to get accepted. Don't really feel like paying any more than that though.

(Particularly because there's 5 of us flying).

From personal experience, I don't think MH charges you the full amount when you place the bid, I've only ever been charged USD1 which have always been refunded promptly.

And neither have I had to wait so long to receive the results of the upgrade bid—previous result emails have been at least 60 hours prior to scheduled departure, but this one just sat at “Pending” till after the flight was completed, with the checkin and gate agents only having as much of a clue as I did.

They did actually charge my card three days before departure, and this is reflected on my online statement and remaining credit limit. They were however quick to reply my email promising to reverse it.

I just had the upgrade email for my KUL/LHR in May.
I am booked in J and could bid to upgrade to F. The minimum bid is US$1880.
For me that did not seem worth it, but others may disagree.

Am taking KUL-NRT shortly. My bid SGD300 seemed to be disqualified,
hence changed to SGD345. The chance of being upgraded is still very slim, though...

11DEC MH67 ICN-KUL; min SGD300; my bid SGD340; unsuccessful; J cabin full; notified at T-21
11DEC MH607 KUL-SIN; min SGD80; my bid SGD80; unsuccessful; J cabin full; notified after flight completion

For next year's trips I'm going to be booking straight into Business. The Z fares are particularly attractive, even more so than they were for this month.

12NOV DEL-KUL NZD140 UNSUCCESSFUL
22NOV KUL-AKL NZD515 SUCCESSFUL :-) Notified about 10h before check-in open (48h prior). Enabled me to do seat selection before check-in and also Chef-on-Call meal selection by email.
With my successful KUL-AKL upgrade at NZD515, it turned out to be a disaster. Seated in 1K on a full flight, the seat wouldn't recline due to a power supply problem. The crew manually released the seat but to try convert it into the flatbed position. But the furthest it would go was a recline similar to a shorthaul Business seat. And the Beef Cheek meal turned out as tough as boots; the knife couldn't even sink into it. It was inedible (I'm not exaggerating as I'm very easy to feed). But the crew were excellent.

I emailed in a complaint the day after arrival and haven't heard back (except from an automated acknowledgement). I've now disputed the charge partially on my credit card as "Defective Product". Let's see how this goes.

Any opinions as to how much is a reasonable amount to dispute?
