MHUpgrade is MH's implementation of Plusgrade's bid on an upgrade platform.
  • You can check if your itinerary is eligible for bidding on an upgrade (most are) on MH's website here, but it typically takes 24-48 hours after the ticket is issued for the itinerary to be in Plusgrade's system
  • You cannot bid for flights departing within 72 hours
  • Minimum bids are dynamically set based on various factors, and don't appear to change as you get closer to flight departure
  • Tip: If you're bidding the minimum, you should consider making the bid in USD unless bidding in your home currency avoids credit card costs that are higher than the difference in pricing (see this post)
  • Bid amounts can be changed or withdrawn up to 72 hours from flight departure. It does not appear that you can update the credit card number
  • Accepted bids will be processed within the 72 hours window, generally prior to 48 hours to departure
  • If your bid is accepted:
    • The credit card will be charged
    • You will be rebooked in "I" class for business class, "P" class for first class
    • You will receive an email notification from Plusgrade
    • You will receive an email with your new eTicket from the airline
  • Within MH Enrich, mileage accrual is based on the fare class on your original ticket. For partner programs, without manual intervention, your mileage accrual is based on the class you've been rebooked into, not the one from your original ticket. Retro claims based on original booking may be required, it is unclear yet if they will be accepted or not.
    • Note that "I" earns nothing, including no segment credits or tier points (it's as if you never took the flight) on AA, BA, CX, and probably other carriers (check your program's information), so from a frequent flyer standpoint you might end up worse off
    • There are multiple reports from multiple users in this thread that mileage on partner programs (BA) will be credited based on the earning rates (if any) from original booking class, following manual intervention/claim.
  • Please read MH's FAQs

Here's my recent experience, all based on minimum bid at the time of bidding. I did see lower minimum prices earlier on but did not bid:

28SEP AKL-KUL NZD515 UNSUCCESSFUL
29SEP KUL-TPE NZD120 UNSUCCESSFUL
12NOV DEL-KUL NZD140 UNSUCCESSFUL
22NOV KUL-AKL NZD515 SUCCESSFUL :-) Notified about 10h before check-in open (48h prior). Enabled me to do seat selection before check-in and also Chef-on-Call meal selection by email.

A month ago, I had put in close-to-minimum bids for SIN-KUL and KUL-ICN in early December. When I checked again today, I saw that the minimum bid for the KUL-ICN leg had been adjusted upward from SGD185 all the way to SGD285, and I had not been notified of this at all. Checked J loads for that flight, but saw nothing that suggested that the cabin was going to be anywhere near full that evening.

The ICN-KUL return leg also had its minimum bid jacked up from SGD170 to SGD295. Has anyone had a similar experience? I have yet to update my bid for the return journey, and I'm contemplating not doing so at all just to see if my original bid would be null and void.

Yes, I had similar last month on SYD-KUL. I had already bid under the new minimum and was not successful even though there were numerous spare seats in business.

What a disappointment. The minimum bids have been jacked up yet again; if all my bids are successful the price I'll pay for the return trip is nearly as much as the original J ticket price at the time of booking. It's not a price I mind paying (in fact, an extremely competitive Business Class fare) and on hindsight I really should have just did so for the mileage accrual.

it would be much more compelling to bid if MH also awarded J miles / sectors , rather than what the original fare entitles.

Then there'd be even less on an incentive to buy an actual J fare.

Or it could increase the $$ people are willing to bid , which from the name itself seems MH was thinking of an e-bay type system

exactly.

If these bid-upgrade things actually awarded miles, I wouldn't outright buy a J ticket anymore. Because why?

because if you MUST have a J ticket, then book J. similar for hotel suites, if I need a suite I'll book one rather than leaving it to chance.

Just curious if anyone has bid more than the minimum amount ? I know I haven't , but would gladly do so if it meant more points & sectors ... basically free money for MH.

Had a chat with the purser and was told the A330 upgauge was seasonal particularly during holiday periods. The A380 was put on one of the flights last week to BKK consolidating 3 flights to one.
Printed J menu choices were also available so I'd assume this would be around for a little while

Travel for work using MH regularly, and book thru AMEX travel. Possible to bid for upgrades on these.
