SoCal Luxury Hotels/Resorts (Consolidated thread)

I'll be spending two weeks in and around LA this summer and I'm not sure yet where to stay.

I've stayed at the following hotels in the past:
-The Montage Beverly Hills
-The Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel
-The Four Seasons Santa Barbara
-Casa Del Mar, Santa Monica

I'm considering to stay at these properties:
-Pelican Hill Newport Beach
-The Montage Laguna Beach

Any other ideas would be appreciated.

It depends a lot on where in L.A. you need to be. Santa Barbara, Newport Beach, or Laguna Beach, for example, could take a LONG time to get to L.A. downtown.

Do not underestimate traffic! Best selection if you actually need to be in L.A. would be found in Beverly Hills.

Thanks for your comment, RichardInSF. I plan on staying a few days in LA and a few days outside of LA, so traffic won't be an issue. Ideally I'd like to stay 5 days each in three different hotels.

I'm currently on vacation with friends who haven't stopped talking about the Montage Laguna Beach. They love that place.

In the city itself, it's hands down the Peninsula Beverly Hills. In the outlying areas, I've no experience, thus interested in this thread.

Nothing in the San Fernando Valley (and I've looked hard) or around Pasadena. I tend to stay at the FS Westlake Village but it is a "Four Seasons Lite."

Pelican Hill is mainly for golfers. And it's a fairly long drive from the freeway. If you do plan to golf it is well worth it though. Very picturesque scenery.

For LA I might suggest the FS LA in west LA. It's on a relatively quiet street which makes it more tranquil to me than the Beverly Wilshire or the Peninsula. Especially breakfast by the pool. You don't feel like you are surrounded by millions of people there.

Thanks for your contributions so far. I've looked at the different options and from what I've seen, south of LA it will probably be the Montage Laguna Beach or the RC Laguna Niguel (again). In LA, I'm still hesitating between the Pen, FS (West LA) or Montage.
North of LA, I don't know yet whether I'll only go for a day trip or overnight.
A lunch at Geoffrey's Malibu is a must for me, but are there any good options in case I want to spend the night in the area?

I don't know this hotel, http://www.topangacanyoninn.com/ but I know the area as I used to live there. One of my favorite places in the world. I think it should be ok for a night or two as the photos look great.

If you are going all the way up to Santa Barbara, Bacara is a very nice spa/hotel. It's been a few years since I stayed there, but it should still be good.

Thanks for your very useful suggestions stimpy.
I did some more research and stumbled upon this list:

http://www.cntraveler.com/readers-ch...-top-25-hotels

Having been at a few of the mentioned hotels I can say that I don't agree with the ranking, but it may still be useful to some.

South of LAX & north of SAN , Montage Laguna Beach maybe best for you . But no where near a top hotel , especially out of the USA .
Be comfortable base to explore Newport Beach & vicinity . Lovely sunsets , Pacific views .

Thanks for your comment, FlyerEC. Could you elaborate a bit further why it's "nowhere near a top hotel" ? From what I've seen and read so far, I had the impression that it was pretty much a top hotel.

Well , not FS , MO or the like in service , etc or on this forum , Amans .
Some posters commented even these in USA are patchy .
Perhaps not quite Baur au Lac , Dolder Grand or some Beau Rivage if looking at Swiss hotels .
