Pelican Hill is mainly for golfers. And it's a fairly long drive from the freeway. If you do plan to golf it is well worth it though. Very picturesque scenery.

For LA I might suggest the FS LA in west LA. It's on a relatively quiet street which makes it more tranquil to me than the Beverly Wilshire or the Peninsula. Especially breakfast by the pool. You don't feel like you are surrounded by millions of people there.
