My top four of the year:

Peninsula Tokyo
FS HKG
Trisara
RC SIN

I'm saving an anticipatory fifth slot for Qasr Al Sarab later this year.

I think I look at it in terms of pleasant surprises or at least hotels that maintained a pretty high level of satisfaction. So far this year:

Mark (NY)
Landmark Mandarin (HK)
Taj Palace (Mumbai)
Peninsula Tokyo
Connaught (London)

And in the category of "much better than I would have thought" - Le Meridien Taipei.

You've got to be kidding. A long-time friend of mine owns the hotel and and while I love him dearly and I have been there countless times and while it is a nice hotel it is a far, far cry from being even a 5 star hotel. The Marriott Copley Place is better than The Lenox, for the views of The Charles River, alone, from any room above the 10th floor. The higher up even better.

As for my choice for best hotels of 2012:

Four Seasons @ Beverly Hills (especially the pool)
Four Seasons Maui
Four Seasons Denver
Four Seasons Pudong (new)
Love the views from the top floors corner rooms of Hilton Hawaiian Village, (especially since it has been completely renovated and since there is no FS on that island) but the whole Hilton Hawaiian Village scheme - and element - is trashy.

I'm a Four Seasons whore.

The Boston Four Seasons rooms are great (Best in Boston if in a room overlooking The Public Garden) but the dining there has gone down the toilet, as is evidenced not just by me but reviews on countless websites.
I am not a huge hotel guy as far as stays go so I don't have a lot to compare too. The Lenox doesn't have a lot that others do but every time I've been the customer service has been top notch. Nothing I've asked that they couldn't do.

Top 3
Four Seasons Park Lane - London
Dolder Grand - Zurich
And even if it's a bit early I would add as most promising of the year Amanzoé - Greece.

1. FSHK
2. Pen BH

Staying at Montage in November and looking forward to that.

Special mention to the club sandwich at The Chatwal, which is far and away the best club sandwich I have had. Otherwise I didn't think that hotel justified the price.

Nice! I am going to be in that area in November as well, but decided on the RC Laguna for FF miles. Let me know what you think of Montage.

edit: will be at Shutters SantaMonica this weekend for a surf competition. Should be a nice place from the looks of it.

Ahhh. OK. Then you're excused. Yes, the customer service there is top notch - sometimes equal to or better than a Four Seasons/Mandarin/Ritz and DEFINITELY better than Marriott Copley Place.

Tops for this year have been:

Amanruya
Amantaka
Peninsula Tokyo
Trisara (3rd visit)
FS Hong Kong ( many previous visits)
Oriental BKK authors suite ( also many previous visits)

Favorite new country visited: Burma - still no true luxury properties, but some very nice places to stay and fascinating country! Road to Mandalay boat was particularly nice, but have to get State Room or Governors Suite as other rooms too small.

Oh sounds really nice! I highly recommend a trip down this river! Was just wonderful and this smaller boat would be terrific!! Might have to try again!
