Q: Did you book through Club 5C? Get an upgrade?
If you're only there for a weekend, you'll probably want a more efficient form of transportation than car. Hopefully the direct Royal Air Maroc flights would work for you.

We booked thru DavidO (Virtuoso) and I don't think we got an upgrade. We were only at the hotel itself for two separate half days under a discovery rate. Also, I think all the rooms in the kasbah price out the same. There are a few multi-bedroom villas but I think those are more for families and not necesarily prettier than the kasbah.

Check out was at 12 and we left at 8:30 but keep in mind that was a gift based on a separate issue.
We did not use the main pool but it was nice and big. There were always a handful of people there, mostly families.
The shop was great. Very large with items in many different price ranges.
We went to the library a few times to pick up and drop off books. There were computers to get online and a small sitting area upstairs. Look for the personal Mac photo book one family donated sharing their adventures at the resort....too cute!

Go for it!

Thanks for another wonderful report & fond memories
When exactly were you there? Am trying to get a cut off time to visit next ( always difficult to choose which Aman next since the teething periods at the new Amans are currently over a ' rolling ' situation) when it is not too hot. Was it busy when you were there?
By the way, Amanjunkies are often/usually accorded upgrades, etc when available when you book directly i.e. liaise with the GM or Aman team you are in touch with.

Wow, Ericka. What an enjoyable read! I loved how there was "no menu at Dar Ahlam", and how you said that "if Dar Ahlam was authentic, Amenjena was fantasy". What a great way of putting it!

I am curious how Dar Ahlam compares to Amenjena in a particular way. You noted that the service at Dar Ahlam was excellent, but how would you say it differs in style or approach from Amanjena, on a 'big-picture" level? I am asking because I wonder how one provides Aman-level service without being Aman, if I can put it like that...

Thanks so much for such a wonderfully detailed report. I felt like I was relaxing while reading it, along with you...

Left the desert late yesterday in hopes of staying at Dar Ahlam. Sadly there were no rooms at the inn. I wish I could offer a report as Erika has of wonderful stays. While most of my trip through Morocco has been absolutely flawless there are a few places I could warn against. Although from my limited time on flyertalk I believe no one here would make these errors. On the positive side I can wholeheartedly recommend the Palais Amani in Fes. A beautifully restored house in the medina with a gorgeous courtyard, wonderful hammam, great food, lovely terraces and fabulous service. I was supposed to leave Morocco this week but I could not go without another brief stay at the Amanjena, I return there this afternoon. Lucky me!
Does two different stays at the same Aman get me credit for true Amanjunkie status?

We were at Amanjena the end of May and a few days into June. I wouldn't go any later than that though due to the heat. I wouldn't say it was busy but there were several families at that time.

We booked under the Summer Oasis package which includes an upgrade.

Interesting question. The property is very small so they know who everyone is. There are no bills and nothing to sign until you leave. You decide when you want to eat...you just show up and they have a uniquely-set table ready for you. Same goes for activities...you leave when you feel like leaving. Its very much about how you feel in the moment. If there is a problem, you don't hear about it. They just fix it. Its very custom. Very "in the moment". It kind of felt like Twin Farms in that regard.

Ericka, thank you for the great report on Dar Ahlam. I am just beginning to plan a yearend one week visit to Morocco, flying in and out of Marrakech. It's been 20 years since we've been to Morocco. We visited Fes, Rabat, Meknes, Casablanca, and Marrakech. This time, we have one week to spend and want to see something not seen on prior trips. I had thought about Taroudant but then stumbled on your report. Dar Ahlam would provide something new for us. I expect to spend the first night in Marrakech due to our late afternoon arrival. We would then pick up a rental car. How would you recommend that we divide 6 nights between Marrakech and Dar Ahlam? Is there anywhere else we should visit?

I'm certainly no expert on the area (others....please chime in!) but I do recall that the Atlas Mountains are between Marrakech and Dar Ahlam. This makes for a beautiful, though somewhat treacherous drive. You might consider getting a driver. Perhaps others here have experience with self driving, though.

Since Dar Ahlam is new to you, I'd suggest you review all their activities and let that guide how long you stay. There are a surprising number of things to do, though not everything will appeal to you.

Sorry this is a bit of non-answer. :-) As I said, I hope others will chime in.

Great report on Amanjena- Any recent experiences? Trying to plan a trip for next March perhaps- thinking of London+Amanjena... any thoughts? Or should I look somewhere else? Of note it seems that prices are significantly lower this year than they were for years past for the Amenjena Winter Escape. Previous years started at 800 euros vs 570 euros now. In addition, the inclusions seemed to have changed. A lunch/dinner were noted in previous years and breakfast seems to have gone from a complimentary daily breakfast to daily continental breakfast... any thoughts? do they limit the breakfast menu to an amount or?

Things have evolved significantly in Marrakech since 2011 ! Aman is still there, but so are a bunch of other great places in the Palmeraie and in the old city.

Great Classic Aman (27 Photos)

Amanjena

Planning

Sometime before the arrival of my third child, I began to panic as the wall started to close in. I decided I needed something, anything to look forward to so I booked a vacation I wasn’t sure we would be able to take. My wife loves Paris so we chose to return to Paris. Wanting to couple that with something else, I mentioned Marrakech and my wife said “why? What’s there?” I responded Amanjena and she said “I’ll go anywhere there’s an Aman…”. So I reached out to DavidO to see if he could book it for me, given that It was over a year in advance and he was able to book the Winter Escape package at the current rates with a confirmed upgrade to a Pavillion Piscine from a Pavillion Basin… As we lovingly celebrated the birth of our third child and made it through the first couple of months, the trip seemed to be within grasp…After a nice week in Paris at the Park Hyatt we took a shortish flight to Marrakech

Check In

So apparently VIP fast track is only included in some of the Amanjena packages.. Nonetheless customs and immigration were quick and we were met by the Amanjena driver just outside of customs and escorted to the waiting BMW X5. Cold towels and cold water awaited us for the short drive. We arrived at Amandari and were greeted by the exec staff, including the GM Nick and resort manager Astrid. AFter introductions, Astrid took us around and showed us the resort and then to our room, where she finished check-in.

Room

Love the classic design of Ed Tuttle here. The Pavillion Piscine is a wonderful room. I've got nothing to argue here. We used the fireplace every night (though it seemed that the wood that they had needed to season a bit more). The pool was heated to a perfect 86 degrees and was absolutely amazing to spend time in. Breakfast both indoors and outdoors every morning. We spent a ton of time in the room and loved it. I've really got nothing bad to say about it... everything seemed to be well maintained, even though the resort is over 15 years old... A really quite nice floral arrangment as well.. I could see that if the occupancy was high that there could be spillover noise from adjacent pavillions (all the Pavillion Piscine's are next to each other)... not a ton of views but the walls afforded a great amount of privacy in the pool....

Dining

I have to say I wasn't crazy about the food. Much like most Amans it doesn't seem to be anything impressive. The Japanese restaurant was quite limited in their offerrings (ie like 4-5 different kind of fish) and didn't even seem to offer tamago, which seems like it would be pretty easy. Breakfast was solid- the Virtuoso offerring mentioned continental breakfast but Astrid said we could order whatever we wanted when I asked her what that meant... Food definitely was not a highlight here unfortunately... I did enjoy afternoon tea each day though!

Location

It's pretty much it's own little enclave, located outside the hustle and bustle of the old city. I get the feeling most of the resorts are like that. We were able to take bikes out and ride around the adjeacent community/golf course

Excursions

We did two. One was the standard old city tour; which was pretty standard... the guide unfortunately did attempt to take us to a carpet shop. Marrakech's old city is crazy and hectic and it was great to return to the calm serenity of Amanjena... the other trip was to a traditonal Berber town, with a stop at a village market on the way. That was really interesting because we also got to have lunch in a Berber house.

Spa/Fitness

The fitness area is pretty small, with just a couple machines. I stayed out of there and we just rode bikes for exercise. I didn't use the resort pool at all as it wasn't heated as warm as our private pool... we took a number of spa treatments, which were of high quality. The facilities themself are quite limited and strangely laid out (ie treatment rooms seem to connect). There are indeed plans for to construct a new spa (as well as a number of villas). Apparently there are some tennis courts as well...

Grounds

Loved them. It's a pretty compact resort but thoughtfully laid out by Ed Tuttle.

DSCF1058.JPGIMG_2432.jpg1_IMG_2433.jpgIMG_2459.jpgIMG_2466.jpgIMG_2481.jpgIMG_2514.jpgIMG_7947.jpg

Service

Service was very very good here, almost as good as a SE Aman. Nicholas is an excellent GM and would stop and talk with us every day. Astrid was wonderful as well and definitely deserves the promotion.. everyone we interacted with was great and knew our name. My wife really liked the terracota foot scrubbers that they had in the showers- we asked at the gift shop if they sold them, which they didn't. However, the gift shop manager called someone in housekeeping who brough us 3 to bring home, without any charge! Definitely a nice touch..We did have a bit of a quibble on our last day- they had a complete property buy-out arriving that day so it wasn't clear what time we would need to check out (our flight was at 5 PM I think). We were indeed cleared to checkout at 2 PM, which was great- however on our checkout day around 1130 AM we went back to our room and a whole squad was in there starting to clean... they apologized and left promptly... Astrid and Nicholas both apologized to us for the oversight, and gave us two leather Amanjena wallets, which I think was a nice service recovery..

Overall

Loved Amanjena. Would not hesitate to go back. Only strike really is that we don't really need to go back to Marrakech so will probably look elsewhere.. But definitely a classic Aman with classic Aman service.

Great Classic Aman

Would you like to write a review on the Amanjena?

No, thank you.

Thanks for that detailed review FDW! Great photos.

Couple of questions/comments (without ever having been to Amanjena):
- Compact? What is that in reference to? Amanjena's grounds look huge! Edit: Maybe it's just the perspective - googled it and it's coming in at 13 acres.
- General, but I really hate that Aman has now taken VIP customs/immigration/arrival service away from being a standard inclusion in the (all) rates. It's a fantastic added service.

Maybe compact is the wrong word. The resort is laid out very rigidly... there are also no natural contours for paths/buildings/structures to follow... as well as a lot of water features. Hence, there's just not that many places to walk and wander- we love walking the grounds and while Amandari was probably smaller; given that it was laid out more organically it felt like there was more walking area...

I also hate that Amanjena has taken out VIP from a standard inclusion... it is included at Amanera still; not sure what other properties it has been taken away at...
