I never flew this bird. And, as trivial as it may sound, I never, ever had a problem! ^

It sounds like the plane type is a terrible bird, or is it just average problematic compared to all other similar size plane types?

Yep, just as I realize that this entire thread is not LH or M&M related. The problem affects more airlines than just OS.

It for sure is. And I am sure the PR guys are happy about that. Blame Canada...

Big/known operators with trouble that I have seen are OS, IQ, SK, WF, QF...

It is. I flew 2 times with such a bird, on Augsburg Airways (member of LH regional), and collected M&M-status and award-miles on these flights.
Everything went well.

Didn't ANA have some trouble a while back with the Q400 also? I seem to remember an emergency landing somewhere in Japan.

The Danish Air Accident Investication Board has released a preliminary report after having discovered rust in a piston in the landing gear.

This is most likely the issue with the similar SK aircraft that emergency landed for the same reason in VNO. WF has also discovered rust in the same place on one of their aircraft (while safely parked).

According to Norwegian Nettavisen the inspection program for the Q400 dictates a check of these pistons only after 15000 landing cycles, whereas the aircraft in question has had as little as 9000 cycles. WF and SK expect to find similar problems on their remainding fleet, which will be grounded until further notice.

Apparently the parts in question is not easily manufactured, which might cause significant delay if all Q400s will require replacements.

The production list of the Dash 8 (the 400 series begins on page 13-17):

http://airfleets.net/listing/dh8-13.htm

I guess Augsburg, Tyrolean, SK, WF, flybe, ANA and a couple of others are affected.

Good that AC has older DH8s when I fly with them to YYZ on Oct 3/4

The OS Dash8-400 are flying again, I've been on one today.

On the other hand I saw a SAS Dash8-400 standing in STR that looked like it's in more long-term parking and didn't fly again yet.

Right, it's LN-RDI. Saw this cute babe on Friday and Sunday parked and tied down. A good sign, the lady is still standing on her legs...!

Aside from these teething problems I really like that bird comfortwise. Much better than its jet engine-powered sister (the short one).
