Rimowa Electronic Tag [and Lufthansa Group]

During my regular drooling over at rimowa.com I've stumbled upon I haven't seen before - "Rimowa Electronic Tag".

Seems like a new variant of their suitcases that has integrated e-ink display to allows you to have the tag embedded in the suitcase, instead of being added to the handle by check-in agents.

LH is the first airline that integrates with this and the program is scheduled to launch on March 14th.

Do you really want LH-IT to tag your bag?!

am I just too blind or is there no actual link to buy it? also, am I right in understanding, that I would need to buy a whole new bag with it? (in which case I am not going to consider it until my current rimowa breaks apart which will take a while )

I don't think you can buy any Rimowa bag online directly from Rimowa, no?

And yes, it has to be integrated into you bag, you can't retro-fit it.

This is slightly OT but somewhat related.

Digital baggage services

With the Lufthansa app and digital baggage services you can enjoy the reassuring feeling on your journey of knowing exactly where your baggage is at any time.

Immediately after you have checked in your bags at the check-in counter or at the self-service baggage check-in kiosks, you can easily call up your baggage receipt on your smartphone via your mobile boarding pass. Your baggage receipt can serve as the basis for tracing your baggage should it be lost or delayed. After your receipt has been displayed once it will also be saved locally in the app so that you can view it whenever you wish.

See just where your baggage is at any time. Via a link on your mobile boarding pass you can quickly and conveniently display the loading status of your bags.

After landing, a push notification will tell you which carousel your baggage is on. This service is available at Frankfurt, Munich, Stuttgart and Milan airports.

To download the app simply click on the logos of the relevant App Store and you will be redirected. The app is equally available for smartphones and tablets.

I've received a message with the carousel number in FRA while I was already waiting for my bag at the carousel but has anyone experienced other parts of this service?

I wonder if the bag comes with the punch card for the LH IT to read it.

Or maybe it has a string with magnetic beads?

Rimowa may partner with LH on several levels ... not just the visible tagging ...

They also allowed to download the baggage receipt as a card for Passbook/Wallet for some time too. I know I have some from my FRA-LAX in June 2015. Thankfully I didn't need to use that to claim my lost stuff

It's not being sold yet. I was told it will be out in a few months but the salesperson gave a clear indication that this is more of a gimmick then anything else.

I just purchased a Topas Titanium with the electronic tag and will use it tomorrow for the first time. Price is €60 more than the regular bag for the electronic tag.

How well made is the electronic tag? Is it likely to break? I am tented to buy one as well once they come out for the poly-carbonate cases and once/if other airlines decide to implement this system.

To be honest I would rather see an attachable electronic tag. That way I can simply exchange it if it breaks or upgrade it if there is something better on the market.

Is the servicable though? Like remove the complete module and put in a new one (from behind for example)?
