170+ fllights on LH/LX in the last 5 years, 60% shorthaul and 40% longhaul, approx. one third on awards.
6 x Y->C op-ups on shorthaul, 9 op-ups on longhaul (6 x Y->C and 3 x C->F).
About the time when I first qualified as SEN, I had 5 op-ups (2x shorthaul, 3x longhaul) out of 6 flights within 7 weeks. ^ As soon as I started paying for Z/D fares my op-up record plummeted.

"Out of desperation" may have been too dramatic but we are talking about a few hundred pounds difference one way on LX. I can usually find Z fares on my route but last time I booked D for the return leg only I had to change the return flight (free of charge) and it gave me more flexibility. I didn't even know it was D until afterwards.
BTW I was op-upped at the gate. ^

My op-up statistics between March 2007 (my first op-up as FTL) and October 2012.
Flights on LH/LX
35% longhaul
65% shorthaul
73% revenue tickets
27% awards & other non-rev tickets
Of revenue flights on LH/LX
33% longhaul (58% in C, 42% in Y)
67% shorthaul (52% in C, 48% in Y)
Op-up rates on revenue flights
C > F (excluding flights upgraded with instruments) 18%
Longhaul Y > C (the last Y > C op-up was in July 2009) 37.5%
Shorthaul Y > C 16%
To answer your question I had 77 shorthaul revenue flights of which 40 were in C and 37 in Y (and op-upped on 6 of them).
Almost all shorthaul C flights are feeder flights or LX "Business savers" costing not much more than (and sometimes less than) Y tickets. I have never paid for stand-alone shorthaul Business tickets on LH!

6th op-up this year...
CGN-MUC today. I was originally booked on LH1991 in M which got canceled. Got rebooked on LH1993 in B, but went straight to the airport and got waitlisted for LH1989 (with 15+ people being on the w/l alreaday). Scored the very last seat on this flight which did include an op-up to C. Thank god that worked, both LH1993 and LH1995 have not left CGN (10 p.m. lcl) yet and my flight was the last one that left CGN for MUC today (at least so far).
