I have an option of ducking to that store or hitting there as part of a mileage run I will be doing later in the trip to ORD. Not sure on cab cost to get to Santa Monica from the airport.

From the LAX Transit Center you can catch the Big Blue Bus to Santa Monica.

Not sure how close you can get to that exact store but here's a start for you!

Hey I figured out what you guys can do!! ^ (in the daylight anyway)

Since I live pretty close I have been following this thread but nothing too interesting came to mind, besides sitting on the beach.

Then I remembered THIS!

They have introductory hang-gliding lessons at Dockweiler beach in El Segundo. It's about a $15 cab ride from LAX (with tip).

For about $100 total, you can try out a hang-glider on your LAX layover! Now there's something new and different.

Thanks - I think we have a plan :) If I read the bigbluebus website correctly I can get on the "Line 3 Montana Ave & Lincoln Blvd" and get off at 11th street which based on google maps is pretty much at 1013 Montana Ave - the required address :D So a quick stop there and back to the AC for a few drinks and a sleep!!!

LAX 5 hr layover-what to do?
 

We are flying YYC-LAX-OGG on Apr. 2. Thanks to schedule changes by both AC & UA, our 1& 1/2 hr layover has ballooned to 5 hours. As we pre-clear clear customs in YYC,
our transit time from terminal 2 to 7 should be short. We could sit in the Maple Leaf lounge in T2 for a while, but my wife & kids aren't crazy about that. Any suggestions? We've never been to LA before.Half-decent restaurant in the terminal? Sitting in a terminar bar is out as we'll have our kids along. Is there time to take a cab anywhere interesting in LA for a bite to eat or quick sightseeing and still be back an hour before our departure to Maui? Just looking for an alternative to sitting in the holdroom for 5 hours! Suggestions?

Overnight Layover Help...
 

Hello... I'm new here and you guys seem really helpful, so hopefully you can help me. I am coming into LAX on a layover before continuing onto Honolulu.
I arrive in LAX at 7:45pm and leave at 8:15am... yes, I did that on purpose. Maximize my time, and no... I don't need to sleep. lol. I can do that when I get back home! :)

So I actually have two questions:
1. What is there to do in or around the area during those hours. I'm open to clubbing, barhopping, eating, sightseeing (whatever I can see late at night). I don't know what time things close in L.A., but the less time I HAVE to spend at the airport itself, the better. I have no objections to renting a car.

2. Also, I am coming into LAX on Continental and then switching over to Delta for my flight to Honolulu. Does anyone know what happens to my luggage? I've heard three different things. I've heard from friends, that I'll have to pick up my luggage and re-check it into w/ Delta, but can't check it in too early (so I'd have to keep it with me until a few hours before take-off). I heard from Delta that if I notify Continental that I'm continuing on to Delta that Continental will assure my luggage will get to Delta. I talked to Continental and they said don't worry about it, Continental will know already that I'm continuing onto Delta and my luggage will automatically go to Delta for my next flight. How they'd know information, is beyond me. I'm afraid of my luggage getting lost since I've had luggage delayed once before; however, as I won't be at home, I can't be without my luggage. Any clues or suggestions?

Please help! I'm from Jersey and the last time I was in Los Angeles I was 6 or 7. I'm 29 now.

LA OVernight stuff
 

First, you will 100% need to rent a car in LA as public transportation, especially at night, isn't going to cut it. Last call in LA is around 1:30 so after that your choices are limited.

There is not much right at the airport. For nightlife, you should visit the website of the LA Weekly before you leave to see if there's a band or event you'd want to check out.

Otherwise, you can head to Hollywood for clubs, dance clubs, bars, etc. There's a decent concetration neat Cahuenga and Hollywood Blvd and aong Sunset Blvd. near La Cienega.

You will not have to recheck luggage since you aren't flying International. The only reason to recheck it is if you want it overnight, in which case be sure to tell the GA to only send it to LAX where you WANT to pick it up.

After the clubs, you might check out Canter's Deli on Fairfax which is 24 hrs.

For an ealy breakfast before heading to the airport see if Sidewalk Cafe is open in Venice beach that early.

Oh, and if you're really stick for something and play poker, the Hollywood Park Casino is 24 hrs and you can play Hold'Em. It's about a ten minute drive from the airport and easy to find.

A couple of questions to help with your answers

Are these two seperate tickets or all on one ticket ?

Those are all excellent ideas, mlasser. You said a good word, casino! lol, I'm not even much of a gambler, but I can find fun entertainment at a casino. If they nickel or dime slots, I can entertainment myself playing video poker for hours! Yes, I said nickel or dime slots... I don't play the slots for the sake of gambling, I do it more for the entertainment of it, I can play for a couple hours on $20, lol. And with 12 hours, I definitely can hit up hollywood, etc. Scope out the place, b/c when I come back from Honolulu, I'm staying in Hollywood for 3 days.

Sheesh! Last call at 1:30 in L.A.? Dang, that's like being home in Jersey. I figured a big city like L.A. would at least have some late night clubs like they do in NYC where they don't even get going good until after midnight ... lol.

Hate to break this to you, but the Hollywood Park Casino doesn't have slots... It's mostly a card club with a small attached bingo hall and OTB parlor. Only slot machines in California are in Indian Casinos, none of which are particularly close to LAX.

Since CA liquor law requires places to cut off serving at 2 a.m., most of the clubs shut down by then or before....some dance clubs or after hours clubs do exists, you might check in the LA Weekly to see if anything in their calander catches your eye. Equally, you might try Club Zone's after-hours directory.

i'd skip the la casino's (which as stated aren't really casinos). hang on to your life dude. next time, transit through vegas.

i like the idea of venice beach for breakfast, but i think it will be cutting it pretty tight what with traffic, dropping off the rental and security lines.

and i'd say just be careful and keep your wits about you when driving around la in the middle of the night. don't get lost. it is somewhat a scary place.

actually, as long as you are awake at that hour, driving around LA in the wee hours is much easier because there is a relatively small amount of traffic on the road. As long as you know where you are going or have a Thomas guide you will be fine. And LA is not nearly as scary a place to drive around as some would have you believe. If you have ever driven in NY then LA won't be bad at all.

And thanks for the heads up, and nope, I don't think you're church ladyish at all... but driving while under the influence is not my thing. I'm an attorney... lol, I'm not trying to get into any legal trouble. :)
