TBIT gates
When you exit your flight you'reon 2nd floor departures right? How do they get you down to the basement where immigration and customs is? is there an escalator right at the gate?

Well.... they park your plane at a remote gate about 5 miles away from TBIT. Then everyone walks down an enclosed ramp to the busses where they manage to cram half the contents of a 777 into each bus for the 5 mile ride to the terminal where you walk through a bunch of dilapidated corridors with half finished construction that has been half finished for as long as anyone can remember to get to the place where there is an overcrowded escalator leading to where some angry CBP Agent yells at everyone. There are moving walkways in the dilapidated corridors but they haven't worked in years and lately they just said f$#! it and laid down plywood on the non-working moving walkways. Guess it's easier than fixing them…………:

LAX question
In early Jan my flight from TN arrives 2 hours before I leave LAX on Air Tahiti Nui, is this enough time? It looks like I'll arrive on NWA at terminal 2, then find a shuttle to Tom Bradley and head back through security before checking in at Air Tahiti Nui desk? Thanks for any suggestions, I've never flown into LAX. The flight is on a Thurs. arriving at 4:50pm.

LAX ?
Thank you, I'm glad I can walk. Is that true for the return, when I"ll fly in at Tom Bradley and out of terminal 5? Thanks for the help.

Yes - it should be the same distance. LAX is set-up like a horseshoe with 1, 2 & 3 on the north and 4, 5, 6, 7 & 8 on the south. TBIT is in the center (between 3 & 4) so the distance from terminal 2 to TBIT is about the same as TBIT to terminal 5.
Weather permitting, I'd suggest walking on the upper deck where it is open air and some occasional nice views can be had versus the lower deck which is dark, smokey and exhaust filled.

actually, i think mabuk dan gila was being sarcastic.
the remote gates are mainly used when the gates are full at TBIT. due to the construction around the main terminal, fewer gates have been available.
either the airlines can use them, or the PAX would have a longer ground hold wait until a gate in the main terminal opens. which would you prefer?

TBIT has been short on gates for a decade and the plans to add more gates run into lots of problems. SFO built a nice big international terminal (for over a billion dollars) in the hopes that if you build it, they will come. So far (many years later), they have not come. A remote "gate" at LAX is preferable to a real gate at SFO for most airlines and pax. But even the brand new LHR T5 uses remote gates, so LAX is not behind the times in this respect (surprisingly). It is just soooo shabby compared to HKG or SIN airports.

Aesthetically, it's pretty sad. Functionally, it's not that different as other posters have pointed out.
A few years ago at NRT, I walked out into the rain and onto a bus. Last year at FRA, we were remote parked and escorted onto buses - in the rain. At least, if I recall, the LAX remote gates are a little enclosure that you walk into and out of. And, as they say, it never rains in southern california

This thread is quite long, so I'm sorry if it's been answered.
I'll be arriving on a DL flight (T5) connecting to SQ (TBIT) and have 2 hours. I can walk from T5 to TBIT, right?

Should the weather be ugly that day you can take the shuttle downstairs as well but that will almost certainly take much longer than walking.

Indeed; from Terminal 5 to TBIT, one turns left out of T5 and passes AA's T4 before reaching the TBIT in a clockwise direction. Since the traffic flow at LAX is counter-clockwise, catching the inter-terminal shuttle would involve many stops and take more time that walking in this case.
