No Need To Resort To Violence!

In Las Vegas, they mug you inside the casinos, my friends: not out on the streets!

Have fun!

And watch out for those one-armed bandits!

As noted between the Strasphere and DT it is definitely iffy. Many scruffy characters hang out there. I never felt unsafe on the southern strip but its LV and full of hustlers and the violent.

Your friend has it backwards. North of the Stratosphere is bad. Real bad. Even in the day time.

Circus Circus/Sahara is iffy (not too bad)

South of Wynn is fine

Koval is BEHIND the strip. Stay ON the strip, and you will only have to deal with the throngs of drunks and the guys trying to stick call girl business cards (with nice pictures) in your pocket..

From personal experience I can tell you that you should NOT be tempted to walk from the Strip to some of the other casinos off the Strip, particularly Hard Rock or Hooters (is it still open?) or some of the night clubs back there. There are some seedy areas and some shady characters back there. A guy on a bike attempted to do a "drive by" purse snatching of one of my friends, only to have the first person in our pack see what was going on and clothesline the fool.

Suck it up and take a cab.

The LVRJ article doesn't add up to me.

1. He was at Body English (Hard Rock)
2. He was staying at Hard Rock in a penthouse suite
3. He was found east of the strip behind Flamingo (roughly)
4. What do the security cameras at the Bellagio have to do with this?
5. What time did the security cameras see him at Bellagio?

I'm confused even more after reading the article.

I agree with this sentiment in general, but would not include Hooters in that list. While they are not on the strip, they are close enough it is not an issue. If you're worried about safety walking along Tropicana from the strip to Hooters (which I have not been in the past), just walk through MGM Grand instead, go out the main entrance, and cross the street there, it's basically right across the street from the Hooters main entrance.

Pockets, now? I'm used to the call girl ads but they've always tried to hand them to me, nobody's ever tried to put on in a pocket or the like. The only pocket they could hope to get one in would be the shirt pocket, though.

About a year ago, late at night some mugging occured on the MGM grounds, near Tropicana avenue...I was staying at mgm that weekend, but only found out about it on the local tv station later that day, I forgot the details--does someone remember this?

I've walked (at around 10 am) from downtown to the strip (I like to walk), via main street to just north of the stratosphere and then las vegas blvd the rest of the way (though not in the last 4 years)--the area is seedy, but I didn't find it unsafe. There are lots of used furnature shops, the gamblers general store is along this stretch, also there is a bus depot for trips from las to los angeles and elpaso (not greyhound, which is near the plaza north on ms.)
If you go from downtown to the strip via las vegas blvd, there are lots of wedding chapels (many drive through.)

Wow, that is quite a ways. The farthest I've ever walked was from Circus Circus to Excalibur and I don't think I'll repeat that .

Yeah, 10am would be ok on Las Vegas Blvd. I would be leery of making that trip after dark, though.

Interestingly, I spoke on the phone with a client in LV last night. He indicated that in the past month, his car has been broken into (not on the strip), his wife's car's gas tank had been siphoned, and his house was robbed. He indicated crime is on the severe upturn of late in the area, but that the city was trying to step up police presence in and around the strip to protect its cash cow tourists. Additionally, LV has been now placed on the list for the top places for car theft in the country.

I still think Vegas is safe for travel, particularly if you don't do stupid stuff like partying til your wasted then getting into a car of a complete stranger. Cmon Javon, use some of that Al Davis $ to buy some common sense.

I'm sure there are isolated incidents, but obviously if you can't/don't feel safe at the MGM Grand, you should probably avoid Vegas altogether. There's some risk no matter where you go.
