Safety issue - south end of Strip

A friend who just got back from LV was told by some locals that it wasn't safe to walk around at night on the south end of the Strip, below Tropicana Ave. Anyone else heard this? Should I reconsider staying at MB?

As long as it is 115 degrees in the afternoon, I would say walking around in the day is more dangerous.

You're fine. You won't have any problems, but if you are worried, there is a tram from Mandalay Bay to Luxor and Excalibur. Enjoy your trip!

That area has never struck me as being unsafe.

Also, anyplace within the view of the security cameras of the casinos is ok. I wouldn't be too comfortable going beyond them at night downtown, though.

your fine, especially since you wont be walking south of MB b/c there is nothing down that way. You will be walking north towards the rest of the strip.

In addition to the tram, mb-luxor-excalibur are all connected by underground passageways--you never leave any of the casinos. The mb section has some nice shops. The plus of using this route is that you get to see each of the casinos gaming areas. You have to follow the signs carefully otherwise you can wind up walking in circles. [Some sections have moving walkways.]

I can't imagine the south end of the Strip being a problem. If anywhere is dicey, the extreme north end, above the Stratosphere, would be more questionable and even there should be fine. Las Vegas relies heavily on the perception that it is a safe city for tourists to visit. I simply can't imagine any significant concern on either the Strip or Freemont Street (though, between the MGM Grand, Hardrock and Excalibur, I would take care to ensure not getting run over by strollers or vomited on by drunken 21+1 day year olds ).

Let's see, now........the Oakland Raiders' new wide receiver Javon Walker got beat up pretty good just around the corner from there at Winnick and Koval, just a few weeks ago: http://www.lvrj.com/news/20625684.html

But if you don't spray Floyd Mayweather's party guests' threads with Dom Perignon at Body English, or try to buy crack cocaine at 5:30 in the morning at the Summer's Bay Resort..............@:-)...............you'll be OK!

From the article: "Walker's abduction story has been met with skepticism, given the 2,000 video surveillance cameras in the Bellagio, including valet areas, elevators, elevator lobbies and public lobbies."

North of the Stratosphere is definitely iffy territory, although so long as you don't go east of Las Vegas Blvd it's not too bad. Within the range of the casino's cameras is ok territory everywhere.

(though, between the MGM Grand, Hardrock and Excalibur, I would take care to ensure not getting run over by strollers or vomited on by drunken 21+1 day year olds ).
I'd also worry about said drunks in cars. Our pedestrian fatality rate is bad but many of them are drunk pedestrians who try to cross where they shouldn't. Treat the traffic on the Strip with a lot of respect--there are a lot of drunks and a lot of tourists looking more at the sights than the road.

Note that the cops say his story doesn't add up.

Like everyone else says, you'll be fine. Just use the typical precautions you would in any city.

Ahhh, it's fine. I wouldn't necessarily walk south of Fremont down to the Sahara / Strato / Hilton zone after a certain hour, but that's the other end of town. The Strip from the Wynn down to MB is pretty safe.
