Lol, good thing you didn't tip her more than $20 or they might have started charging you for multiple rooms

Over the past year tried Excalibur. Offered $40, asked for an upgrade from a Tower Queen to a suite. Clerk said she could not do it but instead upgraded us to a Contemporary Tower Queen. My brother was checking in at the agent beside us and when our clerk realized this she asked if he was with us, we said yes and she then moved over and upgraded him as well. This seemed to annoy the agent who was helping my brother but we were all happy.
Tried it later in the year at MC and clerk returned the money, told me they were full. Even went as far as turning her screen around to show me they were full.
Will try it in a few weeks at NYNY.

Does appear to depend on availability- if sold out, no upgrade possible.
Will be back in few weeks as well.

Cosmopolitan
Does anyone have any experience with the $20 trick at the Cosmopolitan? I'll be checking in tomorrow and it's the first time I've ever stayed at this hotel.
I'm currently booked in a City Room, but would love an upgrade to a Terrace room. I checked on their website and they still have Terrace One Bedrooms & Terrace Suites available during my stay. Would love an upgrade to either one ^

$20 trick worked for me last year at the Cosmo. Was booked in a city room and upgraded to a terrace on a high floor overlooking the fountains. I am a Marriott Gold so maybe that helped as well but I'm sure the $20 didn't hurt.

My brother-in-law tried the trick at Cosmo Jan 3-5. Booked a Terrace and was upgraded to the highest floor after presenting the sandwich. Not sure if it was really an upgrade, but it got him a better view.

Any recent experience with The Wynn? I know they have been known to snub the sandwich but never say never, also I get the impression that aning for cash upgrades at check-in are the best way to go for stellar rooms at the cheapest process rather than booking them in advance.

Honestly, I think the 20 dollar trick is overrated... A lot of times I noticed that I could get the same upgrade it by asking nicely anyways.
A lot of the upgrades depend on what rules the hotel has. If the hotel has strict rules then even the "100 dollar" trick wouldn't work.

Success! ^
Checked in last Thursday for a 4 night stay. Booked a City View room with a casino rate. Handed the agent my sandwich, he took the $20, placed it on the counter and started typing away. I didn't even have to mention "complementary upgrade". He asked me if I was scared of heights - I said no. He said there weren't any rooms left with views of the Bellagio fountains. Was upgraded to a One-Bedroom Terrace room on the 57 floor. Room was awesome! I thanked him, and he thanked me for the "tip".

Venetian Palazzo
I booked Venetian through priceline express deals for Super Bowl weekend. The rest of my party was staying at Palazzo.
During check-in I asked slipped the $20 out with my cc and asked to be moved to Palazzo with a high strip view. It worked, they gave me the 44th floor with a view of TI. They said if I wanted to stay in Venetian they could give me a better view but I preferred Palazzo.
I forgot to ask them to waive the $25/day resort fee. So later on when I had to get a new room key, I pulled out another $20 and asked the young lady at Palazzo if there was anyway they could waive the resort fee for 3 nights. She took care of it.
If I remembered I'm sure I could have got all this done with just one $20 bill, but whatever.
