There are a lotta aggressive rip-off scumbags driving taxis and not all are in LV. I make it a rule NEVER to tip if the person tries to rip me off (or if they request a tip in cash) and I also always report the guy to the local taxi commission via phone ASAP. A nice hint is always pay by credit card.

That's why I mostly stick to Atlantic City.
The cab drivers are more courteous, and completely full service dealers.
Like my cab driver Mo (short for Mohammed) the other night from Bally's to Borgata. Nice conversation, and gave me a full menu of the girls that were available for hire that evening. Didn't need to worry about his medallion number, as he also gave me his personal cell phone number.
Gotta love Atlantic City.

Ugh, ladies-for-hire in Atlantic City. I can't imagine.
Sounds like that show Jersey Shore.

If you are staying at the Venetian, do you need to use a taxi to get around other places? I agree renting a car sounds really nice, but worried I'll end up taking a lot of taxis anyway?

I think $2 is really the minimum (my suggestion would be at least $2 cash + round up the fare to the next dollar).
Depends on how much you enjoy walking or what time of year it is In the middle of summer, you do not want to walk from the Venetian to the Luxor.
The maps make everything seem pretty close together. But remember that each casino is HUGE, and so it'll be a long walk from one to another.
You should consider the LV Monorail if you're taking a lot of trips up and down the strip. The closest station to the Venetian is between Harrah's & Imperial Palace. Or look into The Bus (I think those trips are pretty cheap).

I think you mean Harrah's and Imperial Palace. Bally's/Paris is still a bit of a walk from Harrah's.

But in any event, since a tip is a voluntary thing (otherwise it would be part of the price), the driver should NOT have made demands and made derogatory slurs at me.

I re-checked the tipping "suggestions" which appear in the various weekly guides one finds in your hotel room. And even with (what I consider) extravagant suggestions in some cases, only states 15% for taxis and does not mention a minimum.

I would have shook my head at the driver's audacity and forgotten about it by the time I hit the escalator.
The world is filled with jerks. Don't let them ruin your day.

I had a similar problem with a taxi driver in LV, but my taxi driver was slightly more justified in getting upset at me. As I'm not from the US, I hate tipping, and especially how it's applied inconsistently (why should a taxi driver get a tip and not a bus driver, or a waiter get a tip, but not an air steward, etc) I know they get paid crap, which is disgusting in a country like the USA, but that's a different story. Anyway, I tipped a LV taxi driver around 10-12% (my usual %) and was very upset at me because of the low tip I gave him. I was like FU, I don't have to give you any more, and I didn't.
I also have a question about tipping at buffets in LV and the US in general. Do you need to tip at a buffet in LV or in the US? When I'm in LV, I usualy eat at the cheap buffets like the 777. I don't see any one tipping usually there.
As I've eaten at 777 quite a few times, I recognise a lot of the staff (they don't recognise me as I don't go often enough) so I might give the person that's been the most attentative towards me (removing my plate really) a dollar or two. They always seem genuine when I give them a $ or two.

A couple of years ago, I had a cab ride in Vegas and the fare was around $12. I gave the guy a $20 and waited for change (planned on just taking $5 back). He asked, "you aren't going to let me keep the change?" I took my $5 and tipped him the rest but was a bit surprised.
If I go to a buffet, I won't tip 15-20% but I'll usually leave a little bit of money since they do clear off plates and refill water, get drinks, etc.
