Germanfflyer,
According to the PE manual it should be possible, however, it tends to be very hard. No personal experience regarding this issue, but check this forum for more info. As a last resort you can of course call the notorious FD (Elite) Helpdesk. Good luck!

I upgraded a CO flight using FD miles by calling the FD helpdesk, who were unusually helpful on that occasion.
The did create havoc by creating a completely new PNR in Co's system for this.

Yes, it is within the realm of possibilities, and sometimes it actually works. FD has to get in touch with CO. CO, with some luck, approves the upgd and returns this info to FD. This can take up to two weeks! FD issues you their own KL PNR which CO cannot/will not access... don't bother trying to talk any sense into those people because it's a complete waste of your time. CO will continue to show you in coach (and deny that you've been upgraded) until you get to the airport on the day of your flight, at which point someone will magically "merge" your PNRs and hand you a BusFirst boarding pass. This, however, might not happen at the check-in counter. Maybe in the lounge (free drinks, tips appreciated), maybe at the gate. Good luck, and enjoy CO's superior C-class product. (I like the cradle position in the electrically-operated seat.)

I will soon be able to add my story to this as I just have booked a flight on CO 50/51 and will try to upgrade this via FD... (I already shudder when thinking about the phonecall to FD...

A suggestion !!
CALL NORTHWEST Reservations in the US, explain tht KL has upgraded you on a CO flight, but created a seperate PNR. Ask the agent to merge these PNR's which they can do quite easily,
I had endless hassle's showing seperate PNR's and was incredibly stressed until I spoke to NW who sorted it in moments.

Greetings, all...
I was wondering - is it possible to use KLM miles to upgrade on a Virgin-operated CO codeshare flight? The tickets would be bought through CO but it would be on a Virgin-operated aircraft. (I'm thinking along the lines of LHR-SFO here).
Many thanks.

In answer to the above question about whether you can get an upgrade on a Virgin operated flight even if you've bought a Continental ticket, I would GUESS not, but I would also like to know if someone has a definite answer. Also, to take it a bit further, would you be able to earn FD miles on this Virgin operated flight, even if you bought a Continental ticket? Again, I would GUESS not.
Feedback would be appreciated.

In the last edition of the FD membership guide in 2002 (old -wing system) there were those routes added to the table of award-routes that Virgin flies codeshared with CO.
After some inquiries FD said that this was in error and that there is no chance that FD can 'buy' awards or upgrades on Virgin operated flights.
So the answer is NO. But you can try anyhow...

I just got my upgrade-confirmations in the mail for the segment FRA-EWR on CO51... Nothing regarding the return flight but there is still hope... Great!

Booked CO flights from AMS to EWR in I (cheapest) yesterday - obtained ticket numbers by phone.
Called FD Helpdesk immediately to arrange upgrades on miles - in process.
At the end of the afternoon the travel agent called me to say that she noticed we already received the upgrade. With the PNR I was able to choose seats on the CO website. Today the FD helpdesk confirmed the upgrade and said they will mail the vouchers.
If the flight works out this must be an upgrade speed record.
