Yes, it is within the realm of possibilities, and sometimes it actually works. FD has to get in touch with CO. CO, with some luck, approves the upgd and returns this info to FD. This can take up to two weeks! FD issues you their own KL PNR which CO cannot/will not access... don't bother trying to talk any sense into those people because it's a complete waste of your time. CO will continue to show you in coach (and deny that you've been upgraded) until you get to the airport on the day of your flight, at which point someone will magically "merge" your PNRs and hand you a BusFirst boarding pass. This, however, might not happen at the check-in counter. Maybe in the lounge (free drinks, tips appreciated), maybe at the gate. Good luck, and enjoy CO's superior C-class product.
