Re conversion rate...I say 1:8, whoever gets the closest has one of Rudi's 'free' tickets...fair enough ?

I was speaking to a Royalwing agent today trying to get award tickets on NW (impossible) and asked about the conversion rate. Said he wouldn't tell me the exact rate but that it would be greater than 1:1 and would be announced in the next 3 weeks.

I am moving back to USA and thinking of moving the miles to NW. Is the conversion rate really 1 FD=1.25 WP miles as stated above? Ask 3 FD agents, get 4 different answers.

I guess they will take the conversion-factor from the average raise in awards. So if an Y-award AMS-NYC costs 35000 points right now and perhaps 50000 miles in the future, that would be a conversion-rate of 1.43. If they base the rate on AMS-DTW, it's 1.25, and if they take the AMS-SFO ratio, it's 1:1.

My guess in this case goes to 1:1.25.

Greetings - Dirk

I'll bet a case of Fosters that both Rudi and Mike are correct. Any takers.

Miletex, in your case, a bottle of Dom will be fine.

Dom Perignon?
You guys get me into trouble here.

OK, I take it! (assuming that Mike wanted to say something like 1:1.8 and not 1:8!)
My bet: Conversion rate will be better than 2 miles for 1 point.
[Something like 1 point -> 2.xx miles]

We'll have the champagne together on a KLM Flyertalker meeting and talk a lot about huge mileage accounts and weired travel plans. Anybody else to join the bet?

But to be honest, this is a little bit unfair. I'm also guessing, but...

edited to add a limit:
max. of 10 bottles Dom Perignon (and I surely hope we find a date to kill these bottles together)

2 miles for each point would be nice. But I guess I will also say 1.8. What I do not understand much under the new terms is

"You earn 1 Award and 1 Level Mile per mile flown"?!?!

"Fly me to the moon and let me earn alot of miles."

As I have understood it, award miles can be used for booking awards, while level miles are used to upgrade/keep your status level in the FD program.
Some partners will give award miles but no status miles, or vice versa.

With a PRE-EXISTING policy of transferring FD to WP 1:1.25, I can't see why there is an expectation to change that conversion ratio on this thread.

Don't misunderstand, like you all, I'd be grateful for an unexpected windfall of FD points. But a more generous conversion has got to come out of somebody's pocket. I would suspect that NW would want some kind of compensation for anything beyond the 1:1.25 conversion and I equally suspect that KLM would have no interest in paying such compensation!!

I am more comfirtable using the 1:1.25 ratio precedent as a DEFENSIVE measure to insure that FD doesn't try to decrease the conversion ratio below 1:1.25.

As other boards will attest, FFP benefit expansion is over with. At this stage of the game, we should be looking to PROTECT existing FFP assets from being cut.

European based miles programs seems to need more miles for awards e.g.
SAS starchart europe-ASIA 90.000
UA starchart Europe-Asia 70.000

SAS starchart europe-USA 80.000
UA starchart europe-USA 50.000

That is also a reason why 1,25 is to low if they follow the other european based charts..

With a PRE-EXISTING policy of transferring FD to WP 1:1.25 . . .

Can anyone confirm this by experience with an actual transfer? The FD agents seem to think it is 1:1.

Post preserved for posterity. Chilled please.

newbe at 2+ new for old you must think you are dealing with Santa Klaus and not our frugal friends at KLM?

Folks it is VERY simple. They simply converted miles to kilometres, added 10% tax and rounded up. All the Americans of COURSE, as they are metric freaks know there are 1.609 Km = 1 mile. Therefore 1000 FD points becomes 1800 new FD points. 1609+10% + rounding up = 1800. How much simpler can it get?
