Hi Mike,

If you search: MD-11 and WBC, you'll find a good number of threads dealing with the subject of WBC seating on the MD-11 (including mine). One of the other members, Jet2K, is also working on a seat map at http://seatexpert.com.

I believe they are replacing their MD-11 fleet, but I'll leave the specifics of that question to someone else in the forum. I think the SFO-AMS MD-11 will be totally replaced by a 777 in Februrary.

Bon voyage,

KLM-boy

Thanks...followed your earlier thread about surprising the other half...didn't think about that...but then, being spoilt she would have been more surprised if we were to turn right !

That section of WBC can get noisy during flight. Mike would not appreciate that especially on way to Aruba.

Hmmm, not so sure about these seats. Here is the seat map.

Row 1 H/J and A/B are very nice indeed. Row 2 H/J and A/B are also o.k. The E/F centre seats feel a little claustrophic and you must share overhead bin space with the outer seats.

Apart from being quieter, in rows 1/2 you will have no problems with PAX behind you bumping into your seat when they get in/out. In rows 5+ this can be annoying.

A contact in Amsterdam told me that MD11s would be around until 2009..(They're only 9-10 yrs old; pity KLM didn't spec decent Econ. seats and IFE from new)

KLM wouldn't know what a decent economy seat looks like.

The newer their Y seats, the more uncomfortable they are. The 777 seats with their "fixed lumbar support" represent the pinnacle of achievement in this respect. KLM's main, or only, concern seems to be weight and size reduction, in order to squeeze in as many seats and therefore passengers as possible. The result is thin seat cushions offering a bare minimum of support.

Dambus is giving you good advice -as does Johan and the rest.
Anyway, I fly SFO-AMS MD11, and those are the best seats per Dambus. I take 2J-window.
I liked the 747's before they fazed them out on my run. Lame as it may be, I felt better in one hitting turbulence or a white knuckle landing in bad weather.

I don't care for 5A because the door intrudes on your legroom. You'll also find that, if they're using this entrance on boarding, everyone getting on has to walk past you.

I certainly wouldn't sit there again if I can help it.

Really? It's been a while since I last flew the MD-11, but IIRC door 2L is of the overhead sliding type, i.e. it slides up into the fuselage (hence no slide in the door but in the fuselage). Can anyone else confirm this? On topic again: forget about row 5, the galley and the purser's work station are too close. Like others here said, try to score row 1 or 2, even the middle seats are great.
