Hi Johan, many thanks for this update. As always very useful, in particular since I have a few iintra-EU flights scheduled in August.

On the other hand side, does this imply that long haul catering is still drastically reduced? Or have they gone back to normal as well (after receiving a lot of complaints)?

The following measures have been taken to limit physical contact between passengers and crew:
• On European flights, KLM serves a box with breakfast, lunch or dinner in Business Class depending on the time of day. In Economy Class, you will receive a box with a sandwich.
• KLM serves hot meals on all intercontinental flights. In addition, customers receive a bag with snacks, fruit and drinks.
• We regret you cannot order any special meals at this time.
• Cold drinks are served during the service and coffee and tea are available on request.
• It is not allowed to consume alcoholic beverages brought on board.
• Please note that food & beverage shops on some airports may be closed."

Last I read alcohol was also back on board from the 14th of July onwards. Strange.

Flying AMS-BON next week myself, so hoping almost all will be back to normal. Although catering back from AUA is not impressive even on normal days :)

They’re just saying you can’t crack open your duty-free while on board. Which, for safety and minimizing contact with FAs, I suggest you do anyway ;)

Yeah, last week their web-page said alcohol and more normal catering would be back after 15th of July. That would be more aligned with how, for instance LH, is doing it these days.
However, now it says what was posted above, and there is not confirmation whether one way or the other. They went from 15th of July, to being very blurry.

I’m considering booking a ticket in August, but if I can’t determine what to be served onboard, because their silly statements give run-around, it’s not very tempting to either spend significant amount of either miles or money to fly with them. It smells like dirt-cheap-stingy KLM.

kevinflyaway, please report what it looks like after your flight next week. Thank you!

KLM sent me another update. This one clarifying alcohol is back.

Catering
The catering might be different from what you’re used to from us.

• On European flights, you’ll receive a box containing a sandwich in Economy Class. In Business Class, you’ll receive a box created by Dutch designer Marcel Wanders with breakfast, lunch or dinner.
• On intercontinental flights, you’ll receive a bag containing snacks, fruit and drinks. Additionally, we serve a salad, a hot meal, and a dessert in Economy Class. In Business Class, we serve a salad, a hot meal, a dessert and cheese and crackers with tableware created by Dutch designer Marcel Wanders.
• We serve soft drinks, wine, and beer at mealtime. Coffee and tea are available upon request.
• We regret you cannot order any special meals at this time.

Still seems to be a good bit below what it used to be. I don't like the sound of this box thing. Probably a load of packaging and nothing to eat.

My flight JFK-AMS had a 'full' service; a vegetarian J meal in regular crockery with dessert and a salad, with wine on offer as well as canned beverages (I always drink sparkling water, they had that, so I was happy).

They then give you a large plastic ziplock bag with snacks, soda, water and a brown bread cheese sandwich (broodje kaas ey, doesn't get more dutch than that). It was fine. On a SFO-AMS I might've been hungry.

Did you have to order vegetarian prior to flight?

was wine served from full size bottles? Was there a wine list? A menu? Champagne?

alee0729 Jul 27, 2020 1:15 am

Wine was a mini bottle. No list. Overall can’t complain. Modified full service and reasonably attentive crew JFK-AMS (KL646 on Sat Jul 25)

caliform Jul 27, 2020 1:23 am

Yep, mini bottles, no choice of food (and I am not vegetarian or requested a special meal). They said as much, too: no choice of meal, and please keep masks on until everyone is served.

“No burgundy, grand cru, for you sir, but we have this wonderful tiny bottle of poison”

Thanks for the update. Rather sad.

Fairly standard lunch offered on ARN-AMS in J, wine mini bottles available included 1 white and 1 red. Salad was tasty, dessert was excellent.

Disgusting dinner offered on AMS-IAD in J, wine mini bottles available included 2 whites and 1 red. The chicken was mostly bone and grizzle, and the salad wasn't edible, both served in tableware designed by Marcel Wan*ers.

Thanks for sharing this, as it’s useful.
If I’ll be flying similar route in the near future, I think I’ll be bringing my own food, to make it a little bit more enjoyable especially on the long flight. At least the silverware works.
