It's long form for "gone tech".
The time required for successful technical maintenance/repair exceeds the time available for an on-time - or even a delayed - departure.
Not all repairs can be carried out at the gate and in a timely manner.

KL605/6 AMS-SFO-AMS seems to be cancelled again on 18MAY, it has been affected on 16MAY already.
I hope the reliability will improve when the flight switches from 777 to 744 later this year. I booked two seats in Y and applied Delta upgrade certificates, so in case of irrops I'll probably have to sit in the back 600EUR would be nice, but I much prefer a journey without major interruptions.

Agreed. Like I said, I'm shook that I'm at the point where I am considering other carriers because I'm getting more flights between AMS and SFO cancelled than flights that actually operate normally.

As you're a veteran of the SFO cancellations, can you tell us the various outcomes that have happened when your flight is cancelled?
Have they always been able to accomodate you on same-day services? What has been the greatest, and shortest, delay in getting to your destination? Have you been routed via Paris, vai New York, or what other itineraries have they provided?
Thanks!!

So far, typically I get on the phone between 1-4 hours after the cancellation posts.
I'd say most of the time I end up on Delta. Sometimes, within the US, I route to an airport that has a KLM flight departing from it (SFO-SLC-AMS), sometimes it's a straight shot (AMS-JFK on a Delta flight). Typical delay is 8 hours to a full day. KLM is always unable to get me on another KLM direct flight in any reasonable timespan.
The last cancellation somehow got us on a flight to Paris from Amsterdam and then on to SFO -- same day! That was nice, but we still arrived 8 hours later than planned.
It's worth noting that if you wait for KLM to auto-rebook you, you end up on absolutely horrifyingly bad itineraries and often on a non-SkyTeam flight. I really have no idea why, but it seems to really like Lufthansa.
