Expensive damage for KLM, both the repair and the resulting operational issues.

Code:
 KL605/03MAY AMS-SFO (San Francisco) Booked: --C/--M
 KL606/03MAY SFO-AMS Booked: --C/---M
 KL641/03MAY AMS-JFK (New York) Booked: --C/---M
 KL642/03MAY JFK-AMS Booked: --C/---M
o Cancellation. Flight segments cancelled due to consequences of exceeding
technical maintenance.
o The Central Rebooking Unit is rebooking customers ex AMS and DL-ROC is
rebooking customers ex JFK and SFO.

Wow, that's a lot of pax in a day. Add to that PH-BVA going out of service due to engine work and I bet some folks at KLM are sweating. What's going on there? A lot of bad luck?

KLM has retired quite a few 747s over the winter (PH-BFA, -BFD, -BFK and -BFP come to mind), and I am wondering whether KLM was expecting several new deliveries from Boeing to have arrived by now? The flights that are cancelled are 777-300s so it is not just that one of their 787s has been out of commission for a few weeks.

What happened to the B789?

PH-BHF; damaged at the outside caused by ground handling (early april). Unfortunately there is serious damage -> complex repair that appearantly takes quit some time.

Because of all the composites used in the airframe, I suspect.

Years ago, back when the 787 was still on the drawing board, I read an article pointing out the serious damage that ground handling equipment could do to composite structures, resulting in lengthy, complicated and expensive repairs.

Yes, composite is very tricky for detecting and repairing damage.

Not sure, but I believe KL's S18 schedule is very tight, with few or no spare aircraft to deal with any contingencies. The same apparently holds true for cockpit and cabin crew.

At this point it might be worth creating a general thread for KL cancellations and IRROPs - seems like we get at least 4-6 longhauls dropping every week.

Looks like my AMS-CPT 789 has been swapped for a 772 today.

This reminds of the latter days when KLM hat troubles with their MD11 . A lot of cancellations happened then as well. I'm glad that on my current trip to Asia I'm not on KL even though that would have been an option at the time of booking. Good luck to everyone affected by these cancellations!

Wow, they must have no spare capacity whatsoever.

Still wondering what on earth "cancelled due exceeding technical maintenance" is supposed to mean.
