Hand luggage

I really wish KLM would clamp down on hand luggage. I take one small bag, other selfish arses seem to take suitcases larger than I take on holiday. Then either fill the luggage space for a dozen people in a few bags, or fight trying to get it to fit holding up the flight.

Tonight, still 15 minutes beyond our take of time due to massive cases not fitting, and hostesses getting quite annoy with people.

Carry-on luggage should not exceed a size of 55x35x20cm. Some airports have boxes to check whether it fits into it. Some flight attendants at the gate check this and refuse excessive large carry on items on the plane and should be checked in.

I travel carry on only, within the KLM guidelines. I noticed last trip out of AMS they were making people with bigger bags gate check them, quite forcefully too.

The problem has become much more visible since the charge for checked luggage was introduced, logically.

I've not seen them take luggage off people for a while. Usually used to be only on the very small city hopper planes with smaller overhead bins. The one yesterday was a bigger 737 proper sized plane.

Very annoy when that is the cause of a late departure.

AMS-WAW, yesterday, at least 5/6 passengers were queuing on the E90's aisle once boarding was completed waiting for the crew at the front of the plane to sort their [painfully over-sized] luggage...

Mostly the crew are too helpful sorting out the huge carry ons, finding places for them or in the wardrobe on a 190. Many now seem to use the C class overheads and walk to the back, it is rarely that I see crew stop them.
I see sizers at most gates but have never seen one used but that might be because I'm in the first batch through.

More and more common on-board AF planes also (medium-haul).

Too helpful?

I'd rather say that they do not want to confront passengers and chose the lesser of two evils for them.

They prefer to inconvenience rule abiding pax who suffer from not being able to store their correct size luggage in overhead bins rather than offload oversized or too numerous carry ons.

Noticed the above as well in flights from and to Amsterdam. Amount and size of carry-on lugage seems to have increased after KLM started charging for checked bags.

However recently when checking in at Oslo (To AMS), KLM was offering to check in larger sized bags for free.

I have a simple solution to the problem, whenever I find my overhead bin full in J, I will ask the passengers in the row in front and behind mine if it's their bag, if not I will remove it and put it in the aisle and let the crew handle it.
A few weeks ago on an AMS-TLV flight someone started shouting at me for moving his bag and I kindly replied that this overhead space is for J pax only but since it's so important to him I will be happy to trade seats with him for a fee of 500 Euros (the average fare difference IMO), needless to say he went away to the back with his bags.

BHX-AMS last Saturday - about half way through boarding, a chap enters the aircraft and quietly places his [over-sized] hand luggage in the business class section/overhead bin before proceeding towards the back; at that point, the chief purser (somebody must have probably called her attention) goes like "Sir, please can you take your luggage with you and place it wherever you're sitting" and the bloke in question "But there's not going to be any space down there"; and the purser, again (with a rather annoyed tone of voice): "And how do you know that - can you actually see that far away?". The passenger didn't say a word, got back to row 2 and collected his luggage before making his way to the back of the aircraft...
