Mostly the crew are too helpful sorting out the huge carry ons, finding places for them or in the wardrobe on a 190. Many now seem to use the C class overheads and walk to the back, it is rarely that I see crew stop them.
I see sizers at most gates but have never seen one used but that might be because I'm in the first batch through.
I have a simple solution to the problem, whenever I find my overhead bin full in J, I will ask the passengers in the row in front and behind mine if it's their bag, if not I will remove it and put it in the aisle and let the crew handle it.
A few weeks ago on an AMS-TLV flight someone started shouting at me for moving his bag and I kindly replied that this overhead space is for J pax only but since it's so important to him I will be happy to trade seats with him for a fee of 500 Euros (the average fare difference IMO), needless to say he went away to the back with his bags.
