Comments about JetBlue from a foreigner!

I have been flying JetBlue for a few years now, done 10 flights, so hardly a regular.

The first few times I flew with them, the fares were cheap, the legroom was excellent and the In flight TV was a novelty that passed the few hours.

I wouldn't say I enjoyed the experiences but they were acceptable.

I have just flown twice in the last few weeks and several things come to my notice.

Firstly JetBlue are not that cheap anymore! Having just done a search with other airlines flying the same routes they are all much the same price but with the others I can get miles on my Star or OneWorld account.

Secondly the boarding is a nightmare because everyone seems to carry 10 bags each and nobody stops them, despite announcements at the gate, notices on the website, and those measuring guages everywhere at the airport. I always have a problem stowing my one bag if I board when I am asked and last time was asked to check it in as the flight was delayed while they tried to stow all the hand baggage! (As an aside I think the cabin crews do a great job and I think they should be careful of their backs lifting those heavy bags!!!)

The man sitting next to me had One roll on bag, with another one attached to the top that was the same size, a laptop, and a plastic bag with his smelly pizza and bucket of coke!

OK rant over..... but JetBlue need to restrict bags to the agreed amount to be fair to everyone.

Another issue I have is with the cabin crew. They are ALWAYS friendly, and always do a good job EXCEPT..... I rarely can understand the announcements because they speak so fast, in a monotone voice with no punctuation (like they are bored stiff ....and probably are). But I want to listen to the safety briefing but switch off after a few seconds because it is so bad!

I am English but cannot understgand so I do wonder how anyone with English as not their first language can understand a word.

ATTHISTIMEWEASKTHATYOUSITDOWNANDFASTENYOURSAFETYBE LTSBLAHBLAH....

Finally, the TV is so bad. If you have a great system like this you should be offering a better choice of channels than ESPN ESPN ESPN and 20 other channels of terrible Ads non stop!!!

JetBlue's never been the cheapest carrier, at least in the 2 years I've been flying them out of NYC.

I am a regular on many US airlines (AA, CO, DL, NW, UA) but mainly AA because of its MIA hub. I bought the AYCJ pass and started flying B6 last week. I can tell you that the service provided by B6 is superior to the one provided by the legacy carriers. JetBlue still allows to check-in one piece of luggage for free, which translates into less carry-on bags. Try to board a flight from MIA-JFK on AA and after boarding Group 3 there is not more overhead bin space. B6's entertainment system is superior to any legacy. I have flown DL on their B757's and have had trouble most of the times with their Dish PTV's. CO is getting the same PTV's as B6, so they should be up to par in a couple of years when the retrofit of the fleet is complete. B6 has more legroom than the rest (except maybe UA economy +). B6 needs to have a higher average fare on their flights, since they have less seats on their A320, so this might be the answer to your question about why B6 is more expensive or equal to other airlines in the same route.

Welcome to the United States. Hundreds of channels and nothing worth watching.

Fewer seats than who? Without a first-class cabin, JetBlue seems to have the most seats in a 320:

B6 - 150 seats
US - 150 seats
NW - 148 seats
UA - 138 seats

Cabin Announcements

I think jetBlue keep cabin announcements short and to the point so as to avoid interrupting the tv entertainment. I notice even the pilots are very brief with their comments.

As for the quality of programming, I think you have hit on a cultural issue well beyond the control of one airline

I disagree. In the six B6 flights I took over the weekend I noticed a consistent pattern of the FAs reading the scripts as quickly as possible without the normal pauses that punctuation would suggest. I appreciate that they are trying to get it done but the safety briefings on my second day of flying were noticably less understandable than those on day one, and that's all three crews on day two (only one crew, but 3x, on day one).

Sure, it is a script that they all read many times and it is probably boring to them, but that doesn't mean that they have to be a speed reader while on the mike.

B6 has 25 rows of 6 across with 6 of those rows of extra legroom seating (38").

Replace the FC cabin on the others with standard 3 across seating US and NW would have 156 seats. UA is closer at 144 with their commitment to E+ seating.

I think the point trying to be made is that unless you regularly fly up front, (or compare UA's E+ to a JetBlue standard seat), you will find the B6 cabin to be more spacious than the others' coach cabin.

@:-)Perhaps Jetblue should mandate a 142.50 license fee to ensure there are no ads?

I am also a foreigner who has been living in the USA for about 16 months. Most of my previous travel was on European, Asian or select South African carriers. When I arrived in the US I was absolutely shocked at just how bad the legacy carriers are. I travel mostly with AA - thanks to mileage and a very good chance of upgrades.
I recently bought the AYCJ pass and flew B6 for the first time the other day, and can only say if it were not for the miles and the upgrades I would move all my flying to B6 in a heartbeat. More legroom, friendlier staff for the most part, way less overhead bin storage issues than the legacies (because they don't allow the first bag free) and an inflight entertainment systems that beats any I have personally experienced domestically in the USA. Re the ads - well it is America and if you are watching live tv no way around that I'm afraid.

Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Rojo claimed that B6 has higher fares because they have fewer seats, and I thought it was worth pointing out that they do not have fewer seats. It was nothing to do with spaciousness of the cabin.

AYCJ Pass bought by a Canadian

Ok, here's the poop. Bought the pass to visit old friends from school and my Pan Am days. My overall experience has been very good (these have been my first flights on JetBlue since they don't fly where I really need to commute) and I am generally impressed with their product. As a top-tier member of Star Alliance and Skyteam, I believe that they certainly offer a superior product as compared to the legacy carrier's economy class: More legroom, newer fleet, choice of snacks, very good entertainment system.

Here is what I have flown (and will fly over the last few days of the AYCJ pass):
SAN-JFK, JFK-BQN-MCO-BUF, BUF-JFK-BDA-BOS-BWI, BWI-BOS-RSW-JFK-BTV, BTV-MCO-BOG, BOG-MCO-AUS-LGB, LGB-SLC-SAN-BOS, BOS-CUN-MCO, MCO-PWM-JFK-SMF, SMF-LGB-SFO-AUS, AUS-FLL-LGB-IAD-MCO-SWF-HPN-FLL, FLL-HPN-MCO, MCO-SDQ, SDQ-FLL-RIC-JFK, JFK-MSY-BOS, BOS-AUS-JFK-PDX, PDX-LGB-JFK, JFK-MCO-SJO, SJO-MCO-ROC, ROC-JFK_SRQ-JFK, JFK-BUR

Now for the real question. Did JetBlue sell me on becoming a repeat customer? Yes and No.

The product is great.

JetBlue's lack of enforcement of safety absolutely did not buy my confidence! The F/As are ordered not to enforce safety regulations by the company. Cell phones during safety demos, closed window shades at exit rows during takeoff and landing, passengers using lavs during taxi, etc, etc, etc. I don't blame the cabin crews for not enforcing FARs since the company obviously doesn't back up its crews. Note to JetBlue Marketing/Management: THE PASSENGER IS NOT ALWAYS RIGHT!!!! I didn't appreciate having my safety put in jeopardy because some other passenger (self-important, above reproach, entitled .......) doesn't care about their own safety.

Will I fly JetBlue again? Unless they start improving their enforcement of safety regulations, absolutely not!!!

Incidently, some idiot F/A training instructor that has told numerous F/As that the reason that they don't need to demand that passengers open the window shades at the overwing exits "since they are designed to drop in a an emergency" should be fired! Note to idiot JetBlue instructor: The window shades at the overwing exit are designed to slide down since the operating handle above the window would prevent upward sliding of the shade....in order to "drop open in an emergency", you'd need one horrific downward load g-force impact which would probably not be survivable!!!! Even the Exit Row text on your safety cards requires "Look outside first" (access outside conditions) which is rather hard to do if the shades are closed!

Truly, JetBlue is AN EXPERIENCE!

In other words, JetBlue is just another typical U.S. airline, one where pax use cell phones during safety demos, close the window shades at exit rows during takeoff/landings, and use the loo during taxiing? <yawn...>

I do not believe there is any federal aviation regulation requiring this. I am, however, in full agreement that this should be a requirement.
