Hi, travelling DEL - HND - JFK with JAL in a weeks time. Not sure if flights will operate given the rise in cases in India and US both, but in case they do, anything I need to be aware of? Plan to get tested in Delhi 1 day prior to boarding (more than 24 hours) and vaccinated. Also travelling in J if that matters at all. Thanks!

JAL has usually stuck to their schedules during the month, though the next announcement may see some cuts on the US routes, but I would probably no worry overly much about a reduction in services a week out. Plane can of course go tech...

All you need to prepare is what is required for entry in to the US. Japan does not have extra requirements for transit.

Interlining Luggage through HND on JAL

Hello Flyertalkers, I seek your wisdom please. I’m due to fly BKK - HND in JAL Business before connecting to HND - LHR in JAL First. Flights are on two separate award tickets. Does anyone have experience of this during covid and do you know if JAL will interline bags on two pnrs so we don’t have to clear immigration in HND, which isn’t an option for us right now? I’m hoping I can sweet talk the BKK agents into sending the bags all the way to LHR and giving us the F boarding passes so we can stay airside in Haneda. Otherwise I guess we could take hand baggage only and pick up the F BP at the transit desk in Haneda? Thanks in advance!

Generally, JAL has no problems with handling that for you. JAL has through check across separate tickets within oneworld as a stated benefit. The issue could be that you are not eligible to enter Japan, and JAL in BKK would see you as terminating in Tokyo. But people have not had issues with that in trips similar to yours via Tokyo.

Provided your connection is less than 24 hours. Make sure you have all of your entry requirements for UK fixed, and have your e tickets printed for ease of showing the details.

Thank you CPH-Flyer, that’s incredibly helpful!

I am flying from Delhi via Haneda to SFO (DEL-HND-SFO) on January 18. I land in HND at 6 am and leave at 5:30 pm (no overnight stay). From reading through the above messages, I am assuming this should be ok. The JAL website also makes it sound like this is not a problem. But then I saw an article (on garda dot com) that said international transit is allowed only through NRT. (I am unable to post the link because I am new to flyertalk)
Any information would be very helpful. Thank you.

That article is, to not put too fine a point on it, utter nonsense. Transit through Haneda is perfectly fine. (within 24 hours)

Hello

Have an award booking ANA F in February with the following route CPH-LHR-HND-LHR-CPH - with a stop/transit of 20 hours in Haneda.

From what I have understand I can stay 24hour at HND if have an international onward flight.

Will there be any problems with my arrival and destination are the same? Would I have better odds if Instead did something like CPH-LHR-HND-LHR-MUC and the a separate ticket back to CPH?
I emailed ANA and got the following answer, but are still a bit worried that I might get denied boarding

"Thank you for your patience while we confirmed with Haneda airport agent regarding
your inquiry to return to London within the 24 hours after arrival.

According to Haneda, it is possible to stay in the terminal without entering Japan and
also access ANA lounge before departing on NH211. Since your trip is not till February,
please check for updated entry requirement close to your departure. If entry is
permitted, then you can leave the terminal and check in again for your inbound flight."

Yes, you will have a problem. Unless you can legally enter Japan, you will likely be denied boarding at either CPH or LHR. You cannot arrive from and depart to the same country. Change your return to another city (like MUC) as you suggested and that should work.

Indeed, the rules talk about a transit to a 3rd country. Some posts above is the story of a denied boarding from someone flying US-Tokyo-US due to the 3rd country rule not being fulfilled.

Thanks for the quick reply guys, I will try rebook to

LHR-HND-LHR-CPH
or CPH-LHR-HND-LHR

That should work right?

Looking for the group’s wisdom here. Thinking of doing this this routing and looking to see if anyone sees a red flag or other concern—
  • LHR-HND on JL F
  • 6 hour connection
  • HND-LAX on ANA F
I would be checking bags. JL and ANA have an interline agreement, although I may actually have a BA leg to start and they also have interline agreements with both JL and ANA.

BA does not check in luggage across separate tickets. So if you start with a BA leg, they will not check the luggage further than the end of that ticket. They don't even do that BA to BA.

JL may check through to ANA, but there is no guarantee.

Remember the existence of an interline agreement does not mean that airlines will check luggage through across tickets. It means that they can pass luggage between them, and they would need it for single ticket operations. It is not a service commitment for separate tickets.

Thoughts on the minimum connection time in HND that would work? Putting aside the risk of IRROPS, would for example, coming in JAL at 3:55pm for an ANA flight at 5:00pm be doable (no luggage)? That seems too tight.

Same ticket? As in would ANA know to expect you coming in on the JAL flight?

Though transit passengers are taken off the plane first, there are times when there is a wait, as they have to wait for other flights to be cleared. Only one flight at a time.

(I assume you are not domestic to international)
