CPH-Flyer - thanks for all the help in this thread.
Can report very smooth HND transit on separate tickets (though likely helped along as all on NH). Origin airport were able to issue boarding passes for connecting flights and through-check bags. At HND we were escorted from the plane to transit security by gate 112, and within 10 mins were back in the lounge. Plenty of other people camping around the terminal and lounge also doing airside transit. Most shops and restaurants are still closed. Duty free closed at 1700. A few outlets at the food court near gate 114 were open until 2200. However of note: transit security wanted to see an 'international transit pass' (a green laminated card that transiently changed hands from airport agent to NH agent to us then back again) and scan our onward boarding pass. The airline connections desks were situated after the transit security desk, and were completely deserted (I don't doubt that they can summon a representative if needed though). I therefore imagine you may come up against a bit more friction if you aren't able to check in and get boarding passes for your connecting flight in advance. |
You are welcome. Glad to hear that the information helps.
Transit security has always scanned boarding passes, though earlier they have also been satisfied with an e-ticket print as well. Though should push come to shove, I am sure they would have patience for an airline representative to be summoned and a boarding pass be printed. |
I am planning a RTW including Narita for late January and wanted to get the collective wisdom on what to expect.
• Flying LAX-NRT in JL First arriving T2 at 16:45 on one ticket. • Connecting to a 22:30 EK departure T2 to DXB on a separate ticket, also in First. From colleagues, pax that try to pull this kind of stunt appear to be detained on the arrival flight until someone comes to figure out Once I'm back in departures, except for Starbucks, is anything open after 6pm... lounges, restos, bars, etc.. since the only two evening departures appear to be EK and QR. EK Lounge is temporarily closed and JL.com says their lounge(s) close at 6:30pm. |
I have not heard if anyone being "detained"while connecting on separate tickets. You will be escorted to transit security like everyone else that's connecting, just make sure to have a print of your e-ticket, if you can do online check-in with EK and get a boarding pass even better. I don't know if EK issues OLCI boarding passes, most airlines don't due to document checks.
Currently, everything airside apart from the vending machines close around 7pm.i have taken the QR flight several times, once the JL lounge was open until departure, but that was right after the Olympics ended, and the airport was rather busy with flights. But if there is no JAL departure to Hawaii that day, count on the lounge to close after the US mainland departures. |

Thanks very much CPH-Flyer. Glad to hear that transits seem pretty routine and that I should not have a problem, other than coping with boredom and where to pass the time until EK boards. EF shows a JL flight to HNL at 8:30pm that evening. If the JL Lounge stays open, what are my chances for accessing the lounge on the basis of my same day JL First/OWE arrival?
If you can find a transit desk that can give you your EK boarding pass, pretty good as EK uses the JAL lounges in Narita at the moment. Their own lounge is closed. Without a departure boarding pass probably limited chance. |

A friend did UA to QR with just an e ticket print. No issue.

With the caveat probably that the lounge will need to be open past the check in time of EK, which is not all days it is.

leaving japan for the first time in 2 yrs in jan 2022-for the way back ,any idea where to get a cheap japan eligible pcr test in los angeles ,san diego areas/
know about airports but was looking for something cheaper? thanks |
Has anyone been successful in having their luggage checked through 2 separate tickets and 2 separate airlines?
I’m flying from BKK-HND on JAL in business, and HND-JFK on ANA in first. I know a lot of the other posts say that the airlines can’t guarantee the luggage will be checked through all the way, but just wondering if anyone has any data points that suggest otherwise. |

I've done two separate tickets, LAX-NRT on ANA then NRT-TPE on EVA, ANA was happy to check all the way through. They are both on Star Alliance, but according to this post NH has an interline agreement with JAL, so if that's the case, you should have no problem booking all way through as long as the layover is reasonable (ie less than 24 hours iirc).
Alliance to alliance is never problem for ANA or JAL. From a Japan station domestic to international between JAL and ANA also no problem. Out station is a bit more questionable. |
Good point, thanks.

Miss your connection NRT
What happens if your transiting through NRT and you miss your last connection out for the evening or your connection(international) is cancelled? There is no overnight at NRT apparently and your not planning to enter Japan or go to HND?

There has been some reports of connecting flights being held quite a but to make it possible to get passengers on them. I have not seen any reports yet of people actually missing a connection and what happened. |
