Generally, both of them are quite good at checking luggage through to other carriers on separate tickets, .

Oh, wow! I was under the (mistaken?) impression that for Narita at least, checking through from ANA to JAL was an official thing. On that occasion it was two separate award tickets (ANA award + BA award). I wouldn’t have risked it had I known otherwise.

Yes, and you’d actually pointed that out when I asked about it previously :) I was Chase UR-rich at the time, interested in the airside shuttle, and decided I was willing to roll the dice after all. An ANA rep actually escorted me gate-to-gate, we made the 4:42p shuttle, and ended up arriving 20 minutes before boarding started.

thanks all for this info..2 questions//
1. are there now no restrictions on non japanese japan residents flying into and out of japan, that are different from the rules for japanese?can you do this as much as you want? 2. is flying onto domestic airport a way to avoid having to get picked up from nrt etc? can i buy a tkt lhr-nrt-sdj for example and avoid the taxi?does the dom leg have to be on same tkt? thanks again |
I would assume that a further requirement is that the transit be done airside, without needing to enter Japan to switch terminals, check in, check or retrieve bags, etc. For connections involving different airlines or different tickets (technically, different tickets wouldn't be considered a transit anyway), I would want to verify that there's an airside transit bus operating at the needed time. With less travel, the airside buses between terminals might not be operating or might only be available during certain reduced hours. You wouldn't be allowed to go out to the curb to walk (at HND, BTW do all international flights at HND currently use the international terminal there?) or take a taxi to a different terminal in the same airport.

Haneda - yes, even overnight (unofficially i think the max you can stay is 72 hour). transit hotel is still closed AFAIK, lounges close overnight
Narita - yes, but no overnight (airside is closed) cannot fly into HND and fly out of NRT (or vice versa) unoffically, many people have successfully done transit on separate tickets and separate airlines at NRT/HND (even weird routings like NH MEX-NRT, UA NRT-CONUSA) (obviously you have to follow the transit rules and airline rules for covid, regarding any PCR test pre-departure) check out the japan sub-forum for more info https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/japa...dition-15.html |

If any countries move back up to the 10 day hotel quarantine bucket, there is a risk that re-entry for foreign residents will also be banned, as was the case for India, Sri Lanka, and a few others for a while. |

The rules are currently exactly the same for Japanese citizens and foreign residents.

I have this situation: I am booked ORD-NRT and then HND-JFK in mid-January 2022 on a single PNR (ticket) with ANA.
I am thinking Japan will not be open to vaccinated US tourists by then, so I’m considering flying onward to BKK from and Japan (given that Bangkok should be open to vaccinated tourists by November of 2021). So my plan is to nest a R/T with ANA (same carrier) NRT-BKK-HND on a separate PNR. Do you think ANA would allow me on board in the US and Thailand on two PNRs (two separate R/T tickets) like this? I would be in Japan less than 5 hours each time in NRT and HND. I would obviously have done the proper Covid-19 testing in the US and Thailand before boarding. |

Timatic doesn’t mention a need for PCR (or any for that matter) test for an airside transit in Japan (HND). Am I correct in thinking that if the destination country doesn’t require one, NH staff are not going to ask for it at checkin?
