2-3 hours should be fine. There are quite frequent flights to Itami in the afternoon early evening. So even if you miss one there is probably another.

If Russian airspace has not reopened by then, it might need so re-arrangements anyway, as the arrival time in Haneda currently is a good deal later than the schedule you booked.

Getting worried - I have a flight into Tokyo Haneda on ANA that arrives at 21:10, and have booked a separate flight flight to Saigon on JAL that departs the next morning early at 1:30. These itineraries were booked separately several months apart.

I understand transiting through Japan is allowed, but will I be denied travel at check-in without a valid Visa since the flight I would be checking into has the final destination as Tokyo? In other words, since the connection to Saigon is not on the same ticket, will I be denied boarding to Japan?

If I am allowed to travel, I believe Haneda allows overnight layovers, and this itinerary will be possible... but this would not be possible at Narita since the next flight is the next day. Is that correct?

You can transit on separate tickets, just bring a print of your e-tickets to make it easier, and expect that check-in can take a bit longer than normal. You will probably get lots of emails aboutvth requiments to enter Japan, which will not apply to you. There are no document requirements for transit.

Haneda allows connections of up to 24 hours, and a 21:30 on day 1 and 01:30 on day two is operationally considered a same day departure.

The only thing I would add is does OP plan to check bags? If so it gets more complex....

If you aren't checking any bags this is an easy transit and they are used to it -- if not then you have to check with ANA to see if they can transfer bands to JAL at checkin -- as you will not be able to recheck yourself at Haneda....

hi everyone, very interesting thread i would like to ask anyone who might know, i have a visa for japan from september 4th to 11th (ANA)(NRT), then i go to korea on the 11th (OZ)(ICN), and finally return to the US via NRT (OZ, then ANA, separate tickets) on the 19th, but the catch is:

1. Different ticket on OZ and ANA
2. Both are Star Alliace
3. Will i be able to check in through baggage to the US from korea?
4. Will i bee able to make chek in at ANA on the airside in narita, is there an ANA transit desk in the airside zone?
5. My japana visa i until the 11th, so only transit is available for me

ANA can issue your boarding pass airside, that is not an issue. And generally transit on separate tickets is also not an issue, as long as you leave a decent amount of time between the flights but also come to the first airport in decent time as check-in for the first flight might take a bit extra time while they validate your ticket. Bring a print of your e-tickets. And the usual bits of no overnight connection allowed in Narita, no changing between Haneda and Narita, max 24 hours in Haneda.

I don't know how Asiana works with luggage across separate tickets. You will probably have to ask that in the Asiana forum here on Flyertalk.

I am worried a bit about transfer at NRT. We have tickets booked, and leaving in 10 days on JAL from SFO to SIN, transit in NRT. SFO to NRT in F, NRT to SIN in J. The layover time is only 70 minutes. I think NRT MCT international to international is 60 min. If no delay in SFO, I think we'll be fine. But ... looking at Flightaware, the JAL57 segment from SFO to NRT has 37 late arrivals out of flight history of 82 days. Late by 15 or so min may not be an issue, but there are a few where arrivals were pushing beyond 6pm. The non-stops to SIN after JAL scheduled flights are ANA and SQ, and SQ is the latest one at 7pm.

If - God forbids - my flight arrived late due to delay by JAL, and there is no other flight out of NRT that evening, what do we do? We do not want to get quarantined in Japan and it is too late to change our tickets since this is an award reservation.

If you look at the Asian evening departure bank, you will see that they are delayed about as much as the inbound flights from the US. The generally hold them to try to make sure there are zero misconnects.

There is no transit security check when arriving from the US, so they really only need 10-15 minutes from you leave the plane until you reach the next, if push comes to shove.

Thank you. I did spot checks on Flightaware and you are correct. I saw 2 departures to Singapore (Aug 5 and Jul 18) that were delayed in proportion similar to the delay of the inbound flights from the US.

Hi there, hope someone can help with my case.

I'm planning on transiting NRT with separate tickets, which I understand is completely fine.
However, my originating point will be DEN and I'm a little unsure if that will cause any issue.
My backup plan is to first fly from DEN to LAX or somewhere else on the West Coast and then fly to NRT.

The route in question is:
DEN-NRT (UA), then NRT-SGN (ANA Business booked via VS awards)

Does anyone know if the UA agents in DEN are aware of the possibility of transiting NRT?
And would I be able to check my bags through to SGN?

The Denver agents will be looking at the same timatic information as the LAX agents, and having direct flights to Japan they should be used to dealing with them.

United should be fine to check luggage through to ANA. But bring your e-ticket for ANA in printed form, and leave plenty of time for check-in.

Question about transiting in HND with luggage.
My upcoming flight in September:
- NH, LAX-HND in F booked via VS with miles.
- 4 hour connection
- NH, HND-TSA in J booked via AV with miles.

I know I'm not allowed at this point to retrieve my luggage and check in at HND. But this is not an interline situation. Same metal but different reservation numbers. NH Customer Service on the phone said there's no guarantee that luggage will be forwarded even though it's an NH-NH connection. CS said it will be determined by the LAX ticket counter during check in because there are two separate tickets. I've done this before TSA-HND-LAX pre-pandemic and had no issues. Has anyone encountered this?

FYI, my return flight is TPE-NRT (BR in J), NRT-LAX (NH in F). BR said there's no problem checking luggage through because both flights are part of Star Alliance.

Am I missing anything here on the outbound flight? Or is it that they technically can't say it can happen but it can be done?
