HUCA?

Id be astonished if it is really, truly "up to what the agent at LAX feels like".

(Just saw you have 27 posts..HUCA = Hang Up, Call Again. ;) )

Question about transiting in HND with luggage.
My upcoming flight in September:
- NH, LAX-HND in F booked via VS with miles.
- 4 hour connection
- NH, HND-TSA in J booked via AV with miles.

I know I'm not allowed at this point to retrieve my luggage and check in at HND. But this is not an interline situation. Same metal but different reservation numbers. NH Customer Service on the phone said there's no guarantee that luggage will be forwarded even though it's an NH-NH connection. CS said it will be determined by the LAX ticket counter during check in because there are two separate tickets. I've done this before TSA-HND-LAX pre-pandemic and had no issues. Has anyone encountered this?

FYI, my return flight is TPE-NRT (BR in J), NRT-LAX (NH in F). BR said there's no problem checking luggage through because both flights are part of Star Alliance.

Am I missing anything here on the outbound flight? Or is it that they technically can't say it can happen but it can be done?

Through-checked baggage for transit in HND on separate tickets multiple times on NH, including commencing at LAX. You'll be fine on the NH outbound.

I will be transiting through NRT in November from BKK going to HNL. I am using a UA award ticket for a flight on Thai Air from BKK to NRT. I have about 3.5 hour connecting time in NRT. Then I have a separate ticket on Hawaiian Air from NRT to HNL. HA does not have an interline agreement with Thai Air according to the HA website, and they will only do it if it's on the same PNR anway (which mine isn't).
My questions is...will I be allowed to go into the baggage claim area to pick up my bag if I can show them my connecting flight ticket on HA to HNL? I know that foreign visitors are still not allowed into Japan unless part of a tour group. I'm pretty sure I would need to go through immigration to get into the baggage claim area to pick up my bag - and I need to do this so I can re-check it on to my connecting flight. Is there an exemption for travelers in this situation? Thank you for your comments.

No, you will not be allowed to claim bags if the current Japan-is-closed-to-the-world policy is still in place.

Problem solved if you flew ANA from NRT-HNL. They have 8:25pm A380 NRT-HNL nonstop. Or don't check bags.

Daughter and DH just departed JL57...It was running 45 minutes late.

Agent at SFO said "they will hold onwards flights if it arrives late, so dont worry". (So confirmation from JL that's what they are doing, although it is pretty clear from prior reports)

One bag checked through on two different tickets- AA and BA stock. SFO-NRT-CGK. They had done online check in, with the bookings unlinked. Didnt get TSA pre. (both GE) However, at the check in counter, agent took passports and went to back room... came out with a bag tag to CGK...and TSA pre on the new BPs for both flights.

Totally chill, no headscratching at all.

Looks like they will make it all up in the air, might be 5-10 minutes late.

Wow...so this is a big risk if I book (or keep) my HA business class ticket? I'm trying to use HA as my wife needs that flight to re-qualify as a HA Platinum member for 2023.

You wouldn't even be allow to board at BKK, or at least check your bags. Your only option is to not check bags. How much clothing do you need in Thailand? Pack 5 days worth and use hotel laundry.

We will be in HCMC for 3 days and Singapore for 5 days so we definitely need to be checking bags. We have a business meeting in Singapore to boot so we will have more clothes.

JAL might be an option, as they codeshare with HA. Though it is not entirely clear how JAL handles separate tickets to non Oneworld partners.

As you were informed -- you won't even leave BKK if you continue with your plan -- you can buy clothes on the trip, use laundry, whatever -- only you can decide of the status is worth it -- FWIW -- you CAN actually do this without checking bags -- with checked bags you simply can't -- it's only clothing -- try it you may be surprised! If I have a business meeting on a trip I carry on my suit coat and the pants are in the carry-on -- I press it on arrival -- works every time.... Yes hotel laundry is expensive -- but it works well and you will love the freedom of no checked bags.....

Another question is will HA allow you to check in for their flight while staying 'airside'....

I was in Australia for 30 days with a roller... and regular business trips of a week or two same roll-aboard. Wife too.

I just figure out where/when I can send laundry out. Tough trips are where you are only in a hotel one night for days on end- city to city to city. But I would literally plan on how many socks, shirts and underwear I packed based on the days to each 'laundry stop'.

Also. What if a bag is lost? IMO that is far more of a PITA than having a slim selection of sartorial choices....

GL!

I have 2 separate itineraries. GMP-HND via Korean Air and HND-SFO via United. I will not check my bag. Since they are different alliances, I probably won’t be able to check in at GMP for both flights. Will I able to check in airside at HND for my United flight?

We just got back from singapore and had to deal with similar luggage issues due to separate tickets. We found a handful of 24 hr self service laundry (ended up using Chinatown Easywash - S$5 for wash, S$1 for 5 mins dry)

No issues with the separate tickets (no checked bags). SIN-KUL (MH/JL) to NRT-SFO (NH); no issues or checks going to KUL. To NRT, they wanted to copy down the ticket number for my separate ticket, and they also requested to see vax card at the gate even though it's not required. At NRT transferring T1 to T2 was no issue, but i was able to get a mobile BP for the NH flight since i had completed their preflight documentation. The transfer desk at NRT is post security. The BP scanner at transfer security flashed red, and they briefly stopped me and looked at the BP and their watch before letting me go on. Was able to wander T1 a bit before taking the transfer shuttle over to T2.

Yes you can get you boarding pass airside, you can probably also check in online or via the app and get a boarding pass that way.
