Cruise Train “Seven Stars in Kyushu”

Anybody planning to take this train?

This is all suite train. 3 nights 4 days cruise priced about JPY 620,000 – 980,000 per suite. 1 night 2 days cruise priced about JPY 280,000 – 420,000 per suite.

I admit, this is out of my price range but would love to hear about it if anybody is going to take this train. I am a train geek.

ななつ星 in 九州, Cruise Train “Seven Stars in Kyushu”

By the way, anybody rode on Hokutosei (北斗星) or Cassiopeia (カシオペア) train between Ueno - Sapporo or Twilight Express (トワイライトエクスプレス) between Osaka - Sapporo?

I'm planning a Hokutosei trip sometime soon. I rode the Hokuriku to Kanazawa (before it got cancelled in 2010), but it's rather short compared to the Sapporo routes.

(BTW, don't forget the Akebono and Nihonkai trains to Aomori!)

This came out a couple of days ago. One of the least evocative and descriptive reviews I have ever seen. No doubt the writer had a WONDERFUL time onboard...

Sleeper Limited Express “Akebono” brings back memory! Before Yamagata Shinkansen “Akebono” used to run Ueno-Fukushima-Yamagata-Akita-Aomori. It has become thing of the past when JR had sleeper trains running overnight all over Japan.

Used to take Sleeper Express “Ginga” between Tokyo-Osaka. Train left around 10 p.m. and arrived at the destination at 8 a.m. It was great for business giving full day at Tokyo or Osaka. But Shinkansen got faster and now runs Tokyo – Shin Osaka in less than 3 hours. Many business travel between Tokyo and Osaka became day trip and ridership of Sleeper Express “Ginga” went down.

The Nihonkai train is no longer a year round train. Just run at some busy season times, which likely means hard to get tickets.

I took it a few weeks before it was discontinued. Hate to admit it, but it was a rather brutal train trip (all I could get is a top berth and the train was delayed en route for about 5 hours)

Today, October 14 is “Tetsudo no Hi” (鉄道の日) or “Train Day” or "Railway Day" in Japan. On year Meiji 5 (明治5年 or 1872) October 14 first passenger train service in Japan started between Shinbashi (station was at current Caretta Shiodome next to JR Shinbashi station, there is a plaque explaining the historic site) and Yokohama (current JR Sakuragi-cho station).

Happy Tetsudo no Hi everybody!
