NRT-HND Connection time

Hi All,

Apologies - I know this has been covered.. but i couldnt find anything very recent.

I was going to book a flight that gets into NRT @8:30 pm from PVG.

I'm currently schedule on a HND-SFO @12:05 AM.. This enough time?
I know there is a direct train (around $20?)

Thanks

Jason

As this question isn't related to AA or AAdvantage, I will move it over to the Japan forum where those in the know can provide the best advice.

Hmm. Clear Customs & Immigration, make it to the train, train itself, and then re-clear Customs & Immigration in ~3.5 hours? Assuming no delays at any point and that you know where you're going, sure, entirely feasible.

Train is a bit over an hour. Add on ~20 minutes at each end for to & from train, and another ~30 minutes for Immigration, Customs, and Check in at each end then that gives you a ~1 hour margin to work with.

I'd be checking those train timetables to make sure it runs when you need it though.

Keisei/Keikyu Narita-Haneda Limited Express.

I don't think you have enough time, especially as you will need to check-in for your HND flight and therefore should be at the airport by 22.05.

There is no direct rail service between the airports; you have to get either Narita Express or Keisei Skyliner to central Tokyo, and then transfer by metro & monorail to HND.
NRT to central Tokyo takes about an hour, and then add on transfer time to HND, probably at least 30 mins. Also bear in mind that Narita Express does not run very frequently in the evening: you will miss the one leaving NRT at 20.44 and the next one is not until 21.44, arriving Tokyo station at 22.41

More info at:

Happy Travels.

Limousine bus leaving NRT Terminal 2 at 9:25pm reaches HND International Terminal building at 10:55pm. (It stops at T1 after T2). At that time of night, the bus is likely to arrive on time (perhaps early). Of course, nothing is guaranteed. It's tight but you will probably make it onto the flight from HND.

The trains can get you to HND about 10 minutes earlier than the scheduled arrival of the bus. However, you need to change trains twice.

Ok - Now im even more confused

So which one of these trains is actually direct? (of the three choices).

haha its seems to be a split decision if i make it or not. The bus also seems like a decent option.

Does the Access Express not run that late? Sure, it takes a while, but at least it's a one-seat ride.

Apologies: I stand corrected as Keisei does indeed also operate an "Access Express" line, in addition to the Skyliner with which I was familiar.
However, it is confusing because many of the Access Express line trains do not go to HND, but instead go to Ueno (which is where the Skyliner goes.)
According to the timetable at:
http://www.keisei.co.jp/keisei/tetud...1accessexpress
there are direct trains to HND about every 40 minutes in the morning and early afternoon, but the last train is at 14.44 (weekdays) and 16.44 (weekends.)
The direct trains take 90 minutes, which may not be much quicker than the Skyliner to Nippori, changing to metro and monorail.

For OP, arriving in the evening, he may well be better off with the Limousine Bus posted by jib71 above. However, I still think it's cutting it far too close especially if OP has to check-in for the flight at HND.

Happy Travels.

The rail options are: 20:31 Sky Access train to Takasago and change to a Haneda-bound train, or 20:44 Narita Express to Shinagawa and change to a Haneda Keikyu train. Both options will arrive at Haneda at 22:22.

The change at Takasago is on the same platform, by far the easiest route other than the direct train or bus.

I'd argue that this is easily doable; I frequently manage the reverse in about 3 hours and still end up with 30 minutes to kill in the lounge at NRT. The only assumption is that you have no checked luggage.

Assuming your flight arrives on-time from PVG, you should be able to clear immigration by 21:15 easily, giving you plenty of time to get on the last limousine bus to HND departing at 21:35. This puts you at HND at 22:55 (or earlier, given there is likely to be little traffic at that time of evening). HND isn't ever that busy, and outbound security + immigration shouldn't be more than 10 minutes.

You should be at the gate by 23:30 without significant trouble assuming you move fast and nothing gets screwed up along the way. Just don't miss the bus, make sure you have your boarding pass for HND-SFO in hand, and you'll be fine.

I probably wouldn't plan an itinerary with such a tight connection for myself, but if the OP has no choice about the itinerary, and he isn't an old hand at taking trains around Tokyo, I'd advise him to take the bus. It's almost as fast as the fastest train route and (unlike the train route) it's idiot proof.

FWIW - You can find train times on the Hyperdia website:

Very good point. Also a good idea to run from the gate to the immigration lines - The nearer to the front of the queue the OP can get, the less time he'll spend there.

However, even with luggage it's not a lost cause. OP can probably make it onto the 9:25pm limousine bus, having landed at 8:30pm. In the event of late arrival, though, all bets are off.

Given that the OP's NRT flight is scheduled to arrive at 8:30pm, even Usain Bolt would find making these trains a challenge.

I'm with jlb, take the limo bus. Furthermore, HND is a very efficient airport, you typically can get through it quite quickly.

Yup: didn't look at the timetables (glad I included the rider to the comment!) so I'd agree the bus would be the way to go. As others have said, that direction at that time should be OK, but OP would only have ~1 hour to play with as far as margin goes. I know I'd be comfortable doing it from having BT/DT, but if you're not entirely sure where you're going it could get stressful.
