Terminals
As of December 2021, FCO's active terminals are T1 and T3.

To determine the terminal for your airline, do a search at https://www.adr.it/web/aeroporti-di-...ore-travelling . As of May 2022, the list of airlines using each terminal appears outdated; for example Lufthansa isn't on the list of airlines using T1, but a search shows it using T1. For the most part, Schengen based airlines use Terminal 1; non-Schengen Terminal 3.

Gates are numbered with A for Schengen, E for non-Schengen; U.S.-bound flights are generally from the satellite gate area E31-44, accessed by a rail people mover. All gates can be accessed from either terminal; for example ITA flights to the U.S. check in at T1, on the east side of the complex, but depart from the satellite gates well to the west.

Baggage claim is at T1 for Schengen (i.e. if connecting, the flight to FCO departs from a Schengen airport), T3 for non-Schengen, regardless of which terminal the airline uses for check-in.

Am arriving Rome on Air Canada at T3 at 8:30 am

No Luggage but need to connect to flight to Naples at T1 at 10 am

Then on return arriving into T1 and connecting to Air Canada Flight (I think to T5) - I have 2.5 hours in theory to do this part

Can you provide assistance for both outbound and return?

How to get through immigration, navigate connections, etc

I am on two tickets - one Air Canada and one Alitalia but will print the boarding passes in advance

FCO term 3 transfer to term 1, Delta to Alitalia domestic, separate tickets

I am flying Delta JFK to FCO (using miles) landing at term 3, then going on to an Alitalia domestic flight to Brindisi, leaving from term 1, on a separate ticket. I will have only carry-on luggage but I'm afraid that the bag won't qualify as carry-on on the Alitalia flight. Does anyone have any experience with this situation? Will I have to exit somewhere to check the bag? I have been through FCO many times, but never in this situation. I have 3.5 hours between flights so I'm more concerned with the procedure than whether I have enough time. Thanks!

First of all, welcome to FT, ecamera.

AZ is not that strict when it comes to hand-luggage so, unless you are bringing a distinguishably over-sized item on-board, you should be sound (it is worth adding that BDS is mostly operated by 32S aircraft, with better capacity in terms of overhead space compared to regional aircraft). That said and if you really want to be 100% sure (given also that you will have plenty of time before the BDS flight), I suggest going land-side and ask one of the check-in agents or, in case you qualify for lounge access, then you could pop-in to La Dolce Vita (T1, located land-side) and speak to somebody there (you will find a few check-in/help desks inside the lounge).

I hope this helps.

G

Will I make my FCO connection to VCE?

On June 11th, I'll be arriving in Rome at 7:30am on Delta from Chicago. What's the likelihood that I'll make my connecting flight at 10:10am on Alitalia to Venice? I'll have to pickup baggage upon arrival at FCO and go through immigration. If you were in this situation, would you book the 12:30pm connecting flight instead OR would you book the 10:10am flight? Thanks.

Almost three hours, it's much more than enough (unless your inbound flight is very, very, vry delayed). Plenty of time for some good espresso/capuccino.

That should work just fine. Are you booking these on one ticket, or separate tickets?

The last time I flew into Rome (I think it was in December), we landed around 7am and there was no one at immigration - I use the EU line but there wasn't anyone in either. Then if you have to reclear security, that usually isn't bad.

Luggage comes out fairly quickly, BUT if you can ask DL to check it through to VCE if you're that's one less thing to do. That is, if its separate tickets, if its one ticket they'll check through to VCE no problem. When arriving in Schengen (or is it the EU or some other piece of that Venn diagram, regardless, definitely in Italy) you go through passport control at entrance to Schengen, but customs at the destination, so unlike when you come to the US you do not have to claim and recheck your luggage at the point of entry en route to your final destination.

I'll say this - if you're really uncomfortable about making a 10am connection and would insist on the 12:30pm, at that point you would be better off terminating your air travel at FCO and taking the ~11am train from FCO to Venice. It has the advantage of arriving on the island (airport is on the mainland) and saving you some transfers. You'd come out ahead on the train vs a 12:30 connection.

Rome FCO Sufficient Time??

I will be arriving United Airlines at 7:45AM with 1 checked bag and have an Alitalia flight at 10:00AM separate ticket. Do you think I have enough time to clear customs , get my bag and check in for my next flight? I think I go from terminal 3 to terminal 1, Thanks for your help.

Should be enough, assuming no delay of the in-bound flight. But even with a 30 minutes delay you'll be close to feeling very uncomfortable.

Will be traveling from Rome FCO to Dublin on British Airways. How much time should be allowed to get through security?

Thank you.

It's never taken me more than 2 minutes to the G gates. Given it's mostly longhaul I suspect it depends on the time of day.

Welcome to FT, joedjr.

In normal circumstances, the above mentioned connection would be perfectly doable. However (and as KLouis says), even a slight delay could give you a bit of a headache and this is all because of the current terminal arrangements further to the fire. In a nutshell (and please do let me know should anything be unclear), you will have to:

  • Clear security at T3
  • Follow signs for T1 (BCD gates)
  • Clear passports
  • Get the bus to T1 (note: whilst connections are fairly frequent, there's however no pre-set time-table, meaning that you could be waiting for 20+ minutes). You will be boarding the bus at a specially arranged gate in the H gates area.
  • Once at T1, go up the escalator and you should be at your new gate in less than 10 minutes.

OP will have two separate tickets and a checked bag. Since the carriers are UA (*A) and AZ (SkyTeam), I would be very surprised if the bag is checked through. So my understanding is that we need to add steps for immigration, waiting for the bag, customs, changing terminals (landside?), checking the bag again before the cutoff, airport security. and possibly outbound passport control (before going to the gate).

I wouldn't risk this at FCO with two hours and fifteen minutes. Even before the fire, it could take a lot of time to change terminals from TATL to intraEU/domestic or VV.

There's no way I would do this. The slightest delay would completely scupper the plan. On separate tickets this is just too risky.
