Hi everyone, wow, there really is a discussion relating to everything-travel on FT! I have a PP membership, and am also a Royal Ambassador. I have 2 upcoming reservations with the IC Sydney, and I have just received an email advising me that no upgrades will be provided as both bookings were made using a PP cert. (25% & BOGO) (Stays are on different occasions - not consecutive) Has anyone else had a similar experience? I received a great upgrade in Fiji using a BOGO cert.... :(

I posted about this on the IC Sydney thread...

A really disappointing decision at IC Sydney IMHO. :td:

Note as well that this expressly contradicts what the IC Sydney representative posted in that Master Thread :

The only time the complimentary upgrade to Club InterContinental or a suite is not extended when staying on points or when using the Buy One Get One Free voucher as one night is already free
Although asked several times specifically if the upgrade benefit was excluded on the other PP rates eg 10%/25% off BAR and monthly newsletter specials she posted that the benefit was only denied for points stays and PP BOGO stays, but you have been denied the benefit on a PP 25% off stay.

But what can we expect when the IC Sydney just seems to make up rules to suit themselves

This has been a really disappointing experience for me, as I quite liked the IC Sydney.... until now. As if RA isn't hard enough to come by, and then to be denied benefits upon a stay under a membership that was sold (via direct marketing) to me as an IC program compatible with my RA membership is super disappointing. For those who are interested, my PA emailed the IC Sydney and was advised that yes, this is a rather new policy for this property, and that RA benefits are honoured on 10% off PP AP and PP BF rates AND using the Ambassador Weekend Cert, the only exemptions are the PP certs (BOGO & 25% off BF). :(

is it just me or have the benefits from the PC, RA, PP seemed to have been diluted over the years and whatever benefits are remaining are generally inconsistent and rely on some 'begging'.

All these definitely appear inconsistent with the marketing messages....

You have to remember you are dealing with a "sales person" whose only interest is making the sale, and as a result, will say anything to achieve this!

Watch out for conditions

I just want to post up my experience so others are aware of how PP works. I signed up as we like Crowne Plaza hotels and we have an IC in our town. However I booked a fully flexible hotel room in Auckland CP on wotif, thinking I could present my 25% off fully flexible rate voucher. However on check in the receptionist advised me that the 25% is only valid on fully flexible rates booked on the hotel website. She told me I should read the conditions on the reverse of the voucher. I did and from the wording you wouldn't know that you had to book with their booking system. To me fully flexible rate is the same whether I booked with PP or wotif, or whoever.

Then we tried to go to the restaurant and they told us that because we were only eating entrees the 50% off arrangement only applied to when you ate a main. Again this is not specifically stated on the conditions on the back of the voucher. If you look in the booklet you get with the vouchers it says with the fine print available on 'standard' meals - what is that, standard entrees, standard mains?

I am struggling to actually breakeven on the $299 I paid for the annual membership. I guess if you are aware of the fine print up front you can get value out of the card but if you get caught out a couple of times like that then it may not be worth it. I think PP need to improve the wording of their fine print and make things clearer.

You could certainly get closer to breakeven by improving your tactics.
  1. I believe the IHG website has an online booking price guarantee, so in future if you see a good price on wotif then pursue that same rate on the PP site so your vouchers will be honoured.
  2. It's arguable whether your expectation about 50% off entree-only dining was reasonable, but in any case it's not a good approach towards breakeven on a PP membership; you'd need multiple such dining experiences to achieve that outcome.
  3. The best approach for breakeven is a buy-one-get-one stay during which you can also use the $50 credit and a breakfast certificate. After that, any further use of certs and dining discounts is money for old rope.

I wanted to share with you a phone call I received from Priority Privilege yesterday. My account is up for renewal. The caller stated he was from 'InterContinental' (Falsehood 1). He opened by offering me a choice of bonus benefits as a long-term member.

When I asked what happened if I didn't renew this year but picked up membership later down the track the conversation got interesting. He insisted that:
-Both my PP and PC accounts would be reset
-I would loose all my points
-I would loose accrued loyalty benefits

I pulled him up right away and asked why the status of my Priority Privilege membership would affect my Priority Club membership and he claimed 'because they're linked'. I then asked why would I loose my points and he claimed 'because the account numbers will change and we have to reissue the card'. He used variations of this line as I continued to question him. It bounced back and forth like this. I then stated 'this isn't true as points never expire'. He diverted, bluffing his way through and referring again to 'benefits lapsing / reissuing accounts'.

I then made a statement to the effect 'I think it's deceptive that you're making false claims about my membership to trick me into renewing' and his response was 'well you might feel that why but I've been trained to say this'.

I then said I think InterContinental would be interested in hearing about this conversation, especially from someone with my spend history and he responded 'well if you know so much you would have used more of your benefits'.

I have to say I was very calm in the whole conversation. Firm, but calm. I did hang up when he got catty though. To resort to such misleading business practices in dealing with their customers is unacceptable. sounds like my exact same experience last month :td:

Complained to PC almost 3 weeks ago but they haven't bothered to reply.

50% off membership renewal

From an email received today;

"EXCLUSIVE NEVER SEEN BEFORE OFFER FOR A LIMITED TIME ONLY
We miss you! Rejoin with this online only offer.
Renew online today and save 50%; now $149.50."

I'm not sure why they miss me because my current membership is still live - I've got months remaining, but for $149.50 what's the worst that can happen?
