No, I arrive 19.30hrs on Feb 16, and depart 08.00hrs on Feb 19, so that's less than 72hrs.

Transit visa cannot be got on arrival can it? I must apply in advance at Visa centre?

You have to get it in advance. I'm quite sure it won't be available on arrival, unless you are a national of one of the (very few) countries that are specifically allowed visa on arrival.

Shame nobody has answered this one yet.

I am in India for LESS than 72hrs.

Do I need to buy the 92 visa or not?

I know I need to go to the visa centre in person to pick up whatever visa I need, however if I am ineligible for the transit visa than I am crossing India off my itiniery.

Visa on Arrival facility details..

So unless you are a national of Finland, Japan, Luxembourg, New Zealand, Singapore, Cambodia, Vietnam, Philippines, Laos, Indonesia or Myanmar" then you are not eligible..

I know I cannot get a visa on arrival.

I just don't know which visa I need to apply for. Tourist Visa, or Transit Visa.

Usually a transit visa is used for enabling the traveller to reach their ultimate destination.. ( IMO say landing in DEL and travelling to Bhutan, Nepal).

I would apply for tourist visa if the documentation was similar and not big price difference..

Don't want to be rude but why don't you contact the Indian embassy to be sure instead of asking people for their opinions

I did that, they didn't really answer my question.

Landing in Delhi Feb 16, flying to Singapore Feb 19 (this is less than 72hrs).

Now obviously I am not going to stay in the airport for the whole 3 nights. I have booked myself a hotel in Delhi, and will be doing a bit of sightseeing, including a daytrip to the Taj Mahal.

Now because this is less than 72hrs, I am hoping I qualify for a transit visa, which is free. However, I guess the purpose of my visit is tourism...

But if you spent 3 days in Delhi BEFORE attempting to head to your final destination (Bhutan)?

Transit Visa is virtually free (maybe a nominal fee), Tourist Visa is now 92 for UK citizens. So quite a big difference.

If u want, u can try applying for transit visa.. but you never know since your purpose is tourism and you should ideally get a tourist visa as per the rules..

Even if they reject the transit visa, u may apply for a tourist visa later but am not sure of the consequences of a visa rejection..
I always personally visit the concerned embassy if am confused on the type of visa needed during application and then mark the application form accordingly..

If it were me, I would go for the tourist visa in this situation every time. Just too risk averse to chance it on the whim of an immigration officer in interpreting whether the transit visa works on a technicality or not.
