Customs folks have a detailed book on the valuation of each kind of tv model and they will use that.. ofcourse thats not updated regularly so the notional price is usually higher than what you may have paid abroad.. if u can prove the same, they are sometimes willing to charge duty on your purchase price but YMMV..

35% of whatever you paid for it [assuming no discounts]. Or most likely 35% of what the customs manual says it is worth. Figure that out, and figure shipping costs etc of the tv and then see whether or not it makes sense to sell it on craigslist or ebay or wherever before you move out.

55" TV - Checkin or CARGO - CANADA To INDIA
hi,
i have called British Airways and see if they let me checkin my 55" TV. and the answer is no because the allowed dimensions are
FROM BA SITE
Larger items of up to 190cm x 75cm x 65cm (75in x 29.5in x 25.5in) can be carried for an additional over-sized bag charge. (Currently, we waive this charge so you do not pay it.) Any items bigger than these dimensions will require separate shipping as cargo
My 55" TV is of 75in X 29.5in X 25.5in (only 6 inch more in height). and the same call center lady told me that i can go early and check at the counter and see if they let you checkin because it is only 6 inch difference (no guarantee though). else you have to go with cargo.
So as a PLAN B - i called BA Cargo and they are charging me 275$ + 75$ insurance.
so worst case if i take it as CARGO - do i get the 35000Rs exempt at Indian airport
anyone experienced this scenario before? thanks

sent as cargo means it is held in customs till you pay the duty and / or claim its exemption. Once it gets into the cargo complex you will ideally need a clearing and forwarding agent to help.

i may be wrong here but i remember reading somewhere that tvs are no longer exempt from the duty free allowance....so you would have to pay the same duty whether you carry it with you or send it via cargo....

Only thing is now you have to pay duty at the applicable rate which is currently around 36.5% on the TOTAL price ( no 35k INR exemption)..
If size is very big and you send by cargo, then it needs to be collected from Cargo complex ( which has its own complexities / costs)..

If you were in Dubai on assignment and returning home your duty will be assessed differently. If you are trying to bring a TV as a gift, forget it. A 32" LED TV retails in India for about 16k INR (928AED) all inkl, meaning delivery, installation and guarantee.

Hi All,
I live in WA, USA and planning to move back to India in June 2015 for good. I want to take a 55 inch 3D TV to India. Can I carry 55 inch TV in British Airways? I came to US in 2010. As it is after 3 years and I am permanently relocating, if I carry 55inch TV, is it exempted from customs?
Thanks.

Moving TV to India from Canada
Hi
I need to move my 46" LED Smart TV(used TV) from Canada to India. I need to know the following:
1. Whether the airlines will accept this TV size? Is there any limitations on the size? (or) will they charge extra?
2.How much Customs may I need to pay at Chennai airport?
3. How to pack my old TV? Is there anybody to help in packing my old TV. (I am at Toronto)
Awaiting for your replies
Thanks
Prakash
