Platinum Upgrade?

I am sure this question is answered somewhere but I couldn't find it.

If the hotel you're staying at has available suites when you check in and you are just platinum, do you have a chance at getting upgraded?

Thanks

unlikely. likely those suites would have been given to diamonds.

So question, sorta hijacking but kinda of the same, so as platinum (and forgive my ignorance as I am new to Hyatt and just got their card) it pretty much doesn't guarantee you an upgrade then? or you're sayin just not to something like a suite?

Room upgrades are not a published Platinum benefit.

And upgrades to suites without a DSU are not a published benefit for anyone. The hotel can be full of Diamonds and every suite on the property can still go empty.

That said, any guest can get upgraded for a variety of reasons, and a Platinum would have better odds than a no-status guest. But it is not a benefit and should never be an expectation.

Actually Diamonds are not given suites either. You have to use your DSU - Diamond Suite Upgrades

Hyatt Diamond Benefits

I've regularly gotten upgrades as a Platinum, but just in room category. When booking a standard room, it's not uncommon to be upgraded to at least a room with a better view or even a corner room of sorts with of a bit extra space. Suites, however, I have only received on 3-4 occasions and most-definitely should not be expected.

Ultimately, regardless of hotel status, you will get one of two things:

1. Whatever room the hotel decides to give you
2. Whatever room you can negotiate with the hotel

yes - we all know that. we all also know plenty of diamonds who get comped suites (happens to me often given my travel patterns, and I havent used a DSU in > a year.)

The point is - they'll give the suite to a myriad of diamonds prior to giving it to a plat.

As a platinum, you should definitely never expect for a suite. As mentioned before, it's not part of the T&Cs and Platinum isn't Hyatt's top status. Diamonds should also never expect suites but many have good experiences with hotels offering them anyways.

As a platinum, the best benefits that you can expect are 15% extra points, higher speed internet, and the chance for 2 pm late checkout. Other than that, it's nothing special.

Also kudos to the member above that has gotten 3-4 suite upgrades as a platinum. You probably have one of the best ratios.

Three of those were actually at the same property (Hyatt Regency Clearwater Beach) when we visited three years in a row. On each occasion we booked their standard room, and ended up getting the upgrade to their one-bedroom Gulf-front suite. ^

The other time was a couple of years ago at the Grand Hyatt Seattle when they upgraded us from their standard room to their Emerald Suite.

But, these are definitely not common for a Platinum member, so they've come as a pleasant surprise.

Since Platinum is obtained after five nights, you really can't expect very much. It's not like you're particularly useful to that hotel, unless of course you are. As a Diamond, I'm often upgraded to suites, but usually at properties I sleep in a lot.

Upgrades happen fairly regularly for me, upgrades to suites very rarely. I tend to stay on weekends and rarely more than 2 nights so I might be easily accommodated between two business travel diamonds.

Last few times when I've been at that property as a Hyatt Diamond, the HR Clearwater put me up in big studio type rooms, but not any kind of suite with a separated bedroom. And my stays there are not during peak periods. It may have had to do with the negotiated rate being rather cheap, but still no upgrade even as a Diamond. Ordinarily, Platinums may get a better view, higher floor or slightly larger room than most other customers, but the upgrades are more likely more noticeable and frequent as a Diamond than as a Platinum when it comes to most properties. But there could be an element of the rate making a difference too.

Going from memory -- Platinums used to get certificates after every third stay that could be redeemed for an upgrade to Regency Club floor, drink/snack, 1000 points or something to do with dining (I forget what). This was discontinued in December 2012 so the Gold Passport team could "focus [their] time, attention and resources on improving the program in new and innovative ways rather than administering a benefit that members dont value".

Expect an announcement any day now.
