Airport Transportation

The following thread and its wiki provide all the information one needs to know about taking a taxi from Suvarnabhumi Airport: Catching a Taxi at BKK and general Thailand taxi discussion [SEE WIKI FIRST] The wiki discusses the breakdown of taxi fares from the airport to central Bangkok where Grand Hyatt Erawan is located, and addresses the possibility of being slightly overcharged by a taxi driver.

Alternatively, Grand Hyatt Erawan offers airport transfers in its own fleet of silver Mercedes-Benz S-Class and E-class sedans. The prices of these service are S-Class THB 3,300 (net) per one way transfer (per post 1976) and E-Class THB 2,500 (per post 1975) to or from Suvarnabhumi Airport. Guests using this service will be greeted by a representative at the airport, assisted with their luggage, and escorted to the waiting car.

For an additional charge, the hotel can also arrange "Fast Track" (VIP lane) immigration clearance, as well as the option of being met at one's arrival gate by a buggy and escorted through Fast Track immigration. This service is available for THB 1,600+ 7% vat per person, or THB 2,400+ 7% vat per person to include Golf Cart and porter services.

AOT (and perhaps other companies) also provide transfers from and to the airport. Various vehicle types are available at different price points: Camry (THB 1,200 one way), Mercedes E-Class (THB 2,400 one way).

I always use http://www.limousine.in.th for my car needs in BKK incl airport transfers. 1050 THB from BKK to the city, 900 THB city to BKK (incl tolls).

UBER no longer operates in Thailand. Instead, use GRAB. Similar to UBER, prices will vary. On my trip, I was able to get a GRAB for 364 THB from BKK.

Taxi should run between 400-500 THB. If going from the hotel to BKK, the hotel will quote 500 THB. I had to wait for a few taxi's as the first two didn't want to do unless I paid 750 THB.

Thinking about taking the hotel up on their offer to upgrade a FFN stay to an executive suite for US$150 per night additional. Anyone stayed in one? Thoughts? Thanks.

I have stayed in those suites, and rooms. IMHO, I don't think the upgrade is worth $150, unless you need the room for kids or something. The standard rooms are very nice, with marble bathroom with seperate bath and shower. In fact, I think the bathroom is the same as in the suite.

I had a stay there in January 2003 and found it to be an all around pretty good hotel in a good location. I used a suite award for three people and in retrospect overpaid by quite a bit.

The RC lounge is good with quite a bit of food and an attentive staff. The restaurants on the property are pretty good with the notable exception of an Italian restaurant named Spasso in which we attempted to celebrate a birthday. It was and still is one of the worst dining experiences we have had. Food OK but bad service especially the notable failing of the pre-ordered surprise birthday cake. Bad showing there.

It is an older building that is well maintained and seems to be frequented by a top clientele.

I am just back from BK and attempted unsuccessfully to book a room there at a decent rate AND get points. It appears that they are somewhat confused as to what rates get points and which ones don’t. In any event the res. Manager suggested to me that it was a crap shoot at check out on the gov. rate I was on.

In response to that I got a comp from *wood and stayed at the Westin. We received an enormous suite with lounge access altough we weren’t on the club floor. The experience we had there was every bit as good as the Hyatt and the best part was that we paid $ 85 / US night versus the $ 135 – 145 / US the Hyatt wanted. And I got the points. I would stay there again as in retrospect it was very much the same for a whole lot less money.

I might opt for the Hyatt if it was entirely on an award.

The Hyatt is a fine property, with the same excellent Thai hospitality. Service for return guests is even more personal.

However, the rates for this property seem to be consistently on the higher side for what one expects to pay for similar properties in BKK. More specifically, the Conrad and the Peninsula, which both provide similar level of service and have outstanding facilities, are either the same or less than the Hyatt. Not to mention the old Regent next door (now a Four Seasons) is always less!

Very much agree. Their rates are high for what is received. And there are many fine hotels around as you mention.

As a top tier member in two plans the difference in cost was rather stark - and - now that Hyatt intl properties arent granting lounge acess unless you have a room on the club floor itself it really has a negative effect on this Hyatt in particular.

I've stayed there several times. I agree with the previous posts that the rates are higher here than the Conrad and should not be.

If you can't get a suite upgrade, I prefer a corner room which seems much nicer to me. It has two windows and appears larger than the average room - although it may not be. In an average room, with the dark wood and colors of the wall and floor, it seemed dreary to me.

If you were a Diamond, you would need to make sure to ask for a welcome gift (a key chain or tee shirt) as they don't seem to give it automatically.

The key chain is nice because it has their elephant logo on it. I don't know exactly what the t-shirt looks like; I just saw it given to someone to someone at check in and it was folded up. Both times that I got the key chain I had to ask and both times I don't think they really knew what I was talking about - they were just trying to appease me.

Did you notice if the remodeling of the back outside of the hotel is complete yet?

Its been under construction for the last 10 years since I started going to the hotel.
I will certainly go to the Conrad or the Sheraton suk on my next trip.

I've stayed there nearly 30 times as a Diamond, and always found it to be pretty decent.... location, in particular is good. As others have mentioned, however, Diamonds no longer receive club floor upgrades, so it's no longer a competitive product, IMHO. I plan to start staying at the J.W. Marriott (which also has a good location).

I've always gotten a club upgrade as a Diamond, even on award nights, and as recently as early May. Have they done away with this since then? I guess per policy, they don't have to give club access now and can simply replace with a breakfast voucher, but only IF the club floors are filled, right?

I can't speak to others' rate woes here as I've never had trouble getting credit for discounted rates of various sorts. I'm quite surprised at the generally negative feel of this hotel. It is definitely on the expensive side but the location is fantastic for getting to both Sukhumvit and Silom Rd. (the Conrad on Wireless is also fine for this, but the Hyatt has the advantage of being on the SkyTrain). The staff is also outstanding in my opinion--possibly the best systemwide in my experience. Very warm, welcoming, and especially so towards repeat guests. While I find that other Asia properties -- notably Grand Hong Kong-- have slipped considerably in this regard, BKK retains its high standards.

I will echo the sentiment that the corner rooms are a bit brighter, but again, I'd never characterize the regular rooms (particularly those facing the Sports Club track) as dreary.

One thing to keep in mind is that there are a huge number of government-related (i.e. Royal family...) functions at this hotel: I think this has to do with the "auspicious" nature of the hotel on the site of the revered Erawan shrine. This contributes to keeping the rates high I guess.

As an aside, this is in stark contrast to the Grand Hyatt Taipei, which my Taiwanese friends tell me has terrible feng shui, having been on the site of an old cemetery or something. My sister who works in Hong Kong told me that none of her Chinese colleagues will stay at Grand Hyatt Taipei for this reason. It is generally thought to be quite haunted. I've never seen any ghosts, but I think the hotel is a bit of a dump.

BKK Hyatt is good..but so is Taipei

I agree with all of the good things you say about Erawan Hyatt. Especially about the Lounge staff. They are wonderful, and make the hotel worth the premium price.

But Taipei a dump? That is also a fantastic, first rate Hyatt with wonderful staff. A little more strict about rules then Bangkok. But very nice hotel, nice location and nice staff. And i thought hte fung shui was delicious

Great service

Just stayed at BKK GH a few weeks ago, diamond level, club floor. Government rate no problem for getting points.

For entertainment purposes, JW Marriott is in a better location, not much right around the GH.

Service was great as always, construction had no impact on me.

Thumbs up Confirmed Club upgrade

I sent an email to GH BKK to see if they would lower their rate (i.e. match the rate offered by Conrad) for two one-night stays I planned there in July and August.

The reservations manager sent a reply stating that the hotel could not lower the rate, but is willing to confirm my Club upgrade as a Diamond (as opposed to based on availability at check in).

I suppose this is could be a good way for Diamonds to confirm the upgrades (I wonder if this will work in other Asian Grand Hyatts i.e. SIN or HKG?). OTOH, do you think the USD45 difference in rate is worth the confirmed Club upgrade and one FFN credit?

Former Bronxville resident here.

I havent stayed at the Conrad but it is clear the Hyatt is overpriced. I saved about $60 or so a night by staying at the Westin. The lounge and room ( full suite upgrade ) were great. The lobby etc were lacking a bit. But worth the savings.

I am hoping to use the technique of an reservation then an email to confirm the RC access at least in September at the HRHKG. By comparison I can get an upgrade at the Sheraton HKG and Plat. lounge access ( not Towers ) for $20 less than the HR>

Fitness club, pool under renovation through March 2005

Jus to let you know that the fitness club on the fifth floor has been closed. They have a fitness room on the sixth floor now. A regular room (suite) with treadmills and some other machines. Very small. If you insist, you might be given access to the fitness club at the InterContinental across the street. The swimming pool will also be closed from Aug. 16, 2004.
