Never discussed it with the waiter, in the cases some charges were left on the folio the FD took them off at checkout (Highlands Inn e.g.).

Yes. In countries where servers count on tips (and assuming service warrants one), I leave cash even if the breakfast is comped. IMO, the fact that I scored a free breakfast doesn't warrant short-changing the server.

For excellent service or if you're generous, also leave a bit a cash, where appropriate.
Um, am I missing something? Why would one write "certificate" here?

At PH Seoul, I was presented with a bill to sign for the fixed price breakfast buffet every morning, but it never appeared on my final hotel bill. I don't think there was a line to add a tip, which would have been very surprising for Korea.

In the USA, if I'm given a bill for breakfast, I'll add an appropriate tip. It always has disappeared from my final hotel bill. Otherwise, I don't tip cash at breakfast because of reimbursement rules, because I don't like the idea of encouraging under reporting of tips to tax authorities, and because I believe that the hotel is contributing normal tips for this service. These tend to be buffets, where I would normally tip less than for a served meal anyway.

At the Andaz Maui, they stamp "18% tip" and all one must do is since the bill.

I was asked to sign a bill at PH Busan this morning. It varies at this property but I am never charged and all taxes and service charges are in already.

A few hotels use breakfast certificates or coupons.

I am already getting tired of having to argue about this with FD personnel upon checkout. Just checked out of a stay where I left perfectly reasonable tips at breakfast both days (18-20%), and the associate insisted on arguing with me. She flat-out said "It's not" repeatedly when I informed her that tip was included in Diamond breakfast. Why can't Hyatt be consistent about this?

Also confirmed via Twitter when she kept insisting on it:

Hyatt ConciergeVerified account ‏@HyattConcierge

@ You are correct. Per terms and conditions, the tip is included in Diamond breakfast amenity. ^DB

We need to get this printed and signed by an exec VP and just flash it to those stubborn FD people.

I stopped writing "included" on the tip line after one of the waiters complained about this. Not sure what they get but lately filling in the tip line with the proper amount was always removed. Maybe it is just a few properties where they challenge that.

They charged me at the Hyatt Highlands Inn this weekend. I left $5 both days and they charged me $10 at checkout. This is the norm I find. A few hotels take it all off, but I frequently get charged the "tip" I leave. Since this is only at places with a restaurant, I don't even bother fighting it. Way too much hassle for a few bucks.

I understand your thinking, but I really don't have the luxury of being able to just write off $5-10 25+ times a year, plus it is just a matter of abiding by the stated T&C.

Another Data point: had breakfast at Hyatt is Lisle, Illinois. Tipped $3 for the buffet - it appeared on my bill.
