Use COSTCO or BREAKF (if you have Costco/AAA membership) rate to use GC
I just got more Gift ""Checks" yesterday for forthcoming stays. Costco Schaumburg still have quite a few left (at least 50). This time they used Costco travel full page size envelope instead of white envelope last week. 2 GC per envelope. They must have received proper supply.
I used 1 at Summerfield Schaumburg last week and was no problem. After reading previous posts about advanced prepaid booking may cause problem using this GC so I am starting to book with "COSTCO" promo code (I don't have AAA member card otherwise the BREAKF is about the same rate but come with 2 breakfasts at Hyatt/Hyatt Regency). It is about $3 and $6 more per night at Summerfield Schaumburg and Hyatt Lisle but I can cancel it at the date of arrival if needed.

Yes "spending" them does earn points for the recipient. Not if you are giving them as is usually the intent. It seems with this kind of promotion it is encouraging buyers to save 20% on their purchases which is great for the buyer wanting to save 20%. From a marketing perspective it seems a little weak that Hyatt is just giving away 20% to 30% to gift buyers who in most cases are redeeming the certs on purchases they were going to make anyway. Most companies issue certs with the understanding that many cards/certs are never redeemed. That's why for the "true" gift card buyer giving points (to the buyer) makes more sense from a marketing perspective.

Dear Flyertalk Members,
After reviewing this thread, I have noticed that there are a few questions regarding Hyatt Check Certificates. Hyatt Check Certificates may be redeemed for applicable Hyatt Goods and Services at participating locations worldwide. Applicable goods and services include overnight stays, and goods and services provided or offered by Hyatt owned and / or operated by Hyatt. Hyatt Check certificates must be redeemed in their entirety toward an outstanding balance on a guest folio or guest check. Hyatt Check Certificates cannot be used to pay for prepaid packages or rates, group & catering functions or casino charges. A complete listing of participating locations and terms and conditions can be found at www.certificates.hyatt.com. I hope that this has helped to clarify any lingering questions you may have had.
Sincerely,
Karen Smith

So there you have it. I guess that means that those of you who have successfully had prepaid rates refunded on credit cards and paid with gift checks will receive a lump of coal in your Christmas stockings.
As always, thank you, Karen!

My prepaid rate wasn't charged on my CC. They ran all my charges at checkout.

Thanks for the clarification Karen! You're very responsive on these forums!
I guess those that have been able to apply it on prepaid rates have been fortunate...
