This is actually a good approach, book without the MVP/Gold medal discounts (or when not available), and then search around and BRG the h€ll out of this thing...

I noticed similar thing on Cheaptickets before you could input coupon in search page and it would show in the list of hotels the ones accepting the code.Now this is gone however you can input the coupon on payment page but it is wasting our time as you don't know anymore which are the hotels you can apply the code.

... is impossible to use 'cos Expedia has stuffed up the Orbitz site too.
Orbitz hotel promo codes have been effectively shut down, the "I have a promo code" is gone from the booking page so you can't get the "promo code eligible" message in the list of hotels.
In theory you may be able to apply a promo code right at the end on the payment page but of course you'll have picked a hotel which is not eligible.
Seems Expedia wants to drive away the Orbitz discount code users.
