4 nights would allow you see many parts of HK (of course the longer you stay the better
). It really depends on what type of travel style you have and what sights you would like to see. I would really recommend to visit Lantau Island (big Buddha)! It's a nice gondola ride and walk when you get to the mountain for nice views. There's lots of hiking spots in HK as well. Make sure to save your stomach for all the food you will be eating!

I have been to HK a few times. The last couple of trips I stayed at the Hyatt Regency in TST, and the Grand Hyatt. I would agree with shefgab that TST is a good place to stay - plenty to see and do, and accessible via MTR. When I was there the majority of hotels had shuttles to / from Kowloon station so you could take the airport express from HKG to Kowloon and then transfer to a small shuttle bus to your hotel. However, I am not sure if the shuttles are running post COVID.
I would also suggest getting an Octopus card - it's ideal for small purchases, things like the MTR etc. and means you don't have to fumble around for cash.
Lots of suggestions above in terms of places to go. I'd definitely recommend The Big Buddha on Lantau, as well as the tram up to Victoria Peak. Chi Lin Nunnery and Nan Lian Garden are well worth a visit as is Hong Kong Park. The mid-levels should be on your list too, with a lot of good restaurants either side of the escalators.
Also, you should also take time to view to Symphony of Lights Show which takes place every night. Best viewing points are from the Kowloon side of the harbour. Oh, and the Star Ferry is another must when you're in HK.

Can I add a couple of things? The Dragon’s Back hike is a favourite. Bit of a stiff climb but lovely views.
Secondly the horse racing at Happy Valley. I’m not a huge racing fan, but everything lit up at night was amazing and it was a great atmosphere.
I would definitely stay on Kowloon, as it’s so vibrant into the night.

Agreed. I've not been since pre-pandemic and I've been told by a local that the area's not the same since, with many places shut, but I'd still stay around TST. Shame the airport express station isn't nearby.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned if booking as flight + 5nts accommodation as a BA Holiday then double tier points will apply. Compared to contemplating a flight and 4nts accommodation (compared to possibly booking separately)this would seal the deal for me.

However the OP is alluding to/thinking of going next April and the Double tier points offer ends in December this year.
There's always the (unknown) chance it may get extended again but no gaurantees of course but if it does, then a 5 night stay might benefit the OP.

As you say, there's a bewildering choice of hotels, but here's one more suggestion; the Cordis in Mong Kok. Stayed there pre-covid and really liked it. Mong Kok itself is a very vibrant/busy area, not touristy, which may or may not appeal. Just a few steps to a metro stop, though, so always easy and quick to get to any tourist spots.
For your budget you can get the rather spacious and comfortable Studio rooms which have great views.

I, like many others here it seems, love Hong Kong and sadly have not been back since the re-opening. But will go soon, hopefully!
For me, I am a bit torn between suggesting a habourfront hotel on the Kowloon side (like the InterCon suggested upthread), or the Conrad on the Island side - I am partial to Conrad, as the view from the top floors is also spectacular.
In either case, enjoy! I am in the "extra day is better"-camp as well
One thing I found last time is that there is a bar in what used to be the old city prison - quite interesting place, and worth visiting (I hope it still exists)

Hi, we stayed at Harbour Plaza Metropolis for a couple of years - it's in Kowloon, TST, and has great views of the harbour across to HK island. Medium budget, huge hotel, but spotless and worked well for us.

Would love to hear what HK is like post Covid and the Chines crack down - havent been since 2016 but always loved the city, and the FS there is one of my top 5 hotels of all time - the outdoor pool is just incredible.
