Whether saving $5 is worth breaking the law is up to you though.
since self administered RATs are acceptable, complying is not exactly a pain.

Effective January 5 at 12:01 Eastern Time, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will require a negative COVID-19 test result, taken within two days of departure, or proof of recovery from the virus within the last 90 days, for all travelers, age two years and older, to the United States on flights originating from the People’s Republic of China (PRC), including the Special Administrative Regions (SAR) of Hong Kong and Macau.

Have any dates been announced for the reopening of in-town check in at the Airport Express stations? (I've watched the TVB news & read SCMP but haven't seen anything yet...)

Safe travels and I'd love to hear about any and all experiences there. Contemplating a trip in April once the United non-stop gets going

At BKK TG check-in, nobody asked me about the COVID test thing. TG agent asked me if I had vax shots. I said 4. That's it.
Upon arrival at HKG, nobody asked anything about vaccination or COVID tests. I went through immigration and customs in 3 minutes.
Basically I wasted my time to do a rapid test at my BKK hotel, and obtained HK online green code.
This is what TG sent to me few days ago. Oh well.

Dear Valued Passenger,
All passengers travelling from Bangkok to Hong Kong are required to complete the Pre-departure Form needed by Hong Kong’s Health Control via the link shown below before proceeding to Thai Airways Check-in Counters in order to avoid any inconveniences occurred during check-in process.

Just a few weeks ago, airlines were refusing pax who had done self-administered RATs, even though HK govt had put them in the list of accepted tests.
Flying to HK like you just did has come from a looooong way, and not trying to outsmart the current system was a wise choice.

Don't delete that photo! You're not yet safe. According to the instructions, you must "Retain the photo showing the RAT result or the PCR test report for 90 days."
