Hong Kong Won’t Open to World Until Mid-2022, Lam Aide Says

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/artic...&sref=boLeWatK

Hong Kong could open up to global travel in roughly six months, after officials have successfully navigated the introduction of quarantine-free borders with mainland China and boosted the local vaccination rate, a government adviser said.

As other countries continue opening up, Hong Kong and China remain the only places left in the world
still pursuing a “Covid Zero” strategy that seeks to eliminate local transmission of the virus through strict measures including long quarantines, rigorous contact tracing and targeted testing blitzes.

It's kind of what I've been saying all along on FT. I'm not totally surprised by what's being reported. Hopefully, no further delays as I'm eager to get back to Hong Kong.

As much as I'd like this to happen so that I don't lose my HK ROA (even if I don't ever intend to live in HK again), I don't see how unless the mainland opens to the world at the same time, which I thought had to wait until after the CCP congress.

Lam isn’t making this decision. This decision is made by XJP. They will open to the mainland soon and will open to the rest of the world when the mainland does. Mid 2023 at the earliest.

Sh*t. I was hoping you guys who were making this prediction would be wrong, but it doesn't appear so. This really sucks.

Well, that depends on which faction wins the power struggle atop the CCP.

I think practically every analyst out there says it's a given that Xi Jinping will get an unprecedented third term.

I don't think there is any doubt who will win.

Xi Jinping is the most powerful Chinese leader since Mao. Xi has practically eliminated any potential rival from challenging him. I will be shocked if he doesn't get a third term.

No more airmail between Hong Kong and the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Australia, as well as some smaller places.

Is Hong Kong slowly becoming a hermit kingdom?

What is the situation with mail between these destinations and the mainland? Can HK mail be routed via the mainland?

This is hardly unique to Hong Kong. Back when Australia was doing Zero-Covid it too had suspensions to Airmail services:

Can someone explain how this stops covid? You can't exactly mail airborne covid particles to someone.

It's not to stop covid, it's because there are no flights and/or no staff to process the mail
