Yes, it's that serious.
That.....and they don't have any customers.

Did they do the same during SARS?

I don't recall that casinos were closed. Ferries to Macau certainly weren't stopped. There's no question that this epidemic has sparked a much stronger response than SARS.

Take care with your posts.

"The police said in a Facebook post today a man, who works part time as a security guard at a shopping mall, has been arrested for using a mobile to spread false information claiming that several staffers had a fever and were on sick leave in an attempt to exaggerate the Wuhan coronavirus epidemic and cause panic.

"They urged people not to send out false information as causing others to have unnecessary anxiety is against the law and will only add chaos to society, adding that everyone should fight against the epidemic together."

While I'm not a Hong Kong citizen and have no say in the matter, for my own self interest and fondness for HK and its people, I hope the HK Gov't will restrict access to and fro the Mainland, at least temporarily. If these measures fail and the "occult" scenario materializes, we can reevaluate and consider lifting restrictions; since then, if the spread is uncontrollable regardless of our efforts, there'd be no reason for the financial sacrifice from reduced global trade.

Even after my experience, I plan on making my trip in March; one simply doesn't have the luxury to place life on hold indefinitely.

Flying DFW -> HKG -> BKK in first week of March on AA.

Our flight has not been canceled (AA has canceled all flights to/from HKG through 2/20 is my understanding).

WIth the AA travel alert, I think I have the option to rebook through Tokyo/NRT with no change fees. Let's assume the outbreak is not any worse in Thailand or Japan, come March. My inclination is to change nothing and hope the flight doesn't get canceled.

However, if it does get canceled and it's an overreaction/lack of demand, I'm worried there won't be space left on the DFW->NRT->BKK flight.

Thoughts?

If it was me, I'd rebook to avoid HKG now, while desirable/acceptable itineraries are available.

I'd be concerned that by the time of travel, Thailand might have restrictions on visitors who have transited through HKG. A refusal to admit foreign visitors who have been in China recently could be interpreted to include HKG airport or there might be medical exam or quarantine requirements. This would not be pleasant. Personally, these possibilities (even if low probability) would concern me more than the potential for a flight being cancelled.

As of Saturday, 14 days' quarantine for everyone entering Hong Kong from the Mainland.

This is closing the border without technically closing it.

1. Start 8 Feb so there's two more days to come in if you haven't already done so

2. Quarantine on and after 8 Feb will be done in the form of wrist bracelets.
