Sparked by recent threads on this topic and my utter disgust and outrage with hotels, Hampton Inns included, that charge more for two people than for one person, I am starting this thread to "out" the offending properties.
Please post the hotel name and the increase in rate you found when going from one to two people. Here's my contribution, as an example. If you only check one rate, post that.
Hampton Inn Fairfax City (Fairfax, VA)
+ $6.00 (Best Rate)
+ $5.40 (AAA Rate)

Just checked on any randomly picked date...
AAA rates not available
Burbank Hilton - Best Available
1 person - $189
2 people - $209
The difference is $20.

Last year the 2-person rate was more expensive than the 1 person rate at the Hampton Inn Las Vegas(Tropicana) and also for a future booking at the Hampton Inn New York(Seaport/Financial district). In both cases, the extra charge was/is $10. Unfortunately for some unknown reason, HHonors members can't use the "Spouse stays Free" benefit at Hampton Inns.
Most of the Hiltons in and around Chicago charge extra for the second person.
A few examples: Hilton Northbrook $79/1 $99/2 best available (wknd)
Hilton Oaklawn $138/1 $148/2 best available
Hilton ORD $119/1 $144/2 best available
I started noticing this when checking Expedia to beat the Best Rates Guarantee. Would check, for example, Hilton Northbrook on Expedia and it would come back at $79 (while Hilton.com showed $99). When clicking "Book this room" on Expedia to print a screenshot of the total it would show the room @ $79 and +$20 for extra person.

Hi Y'all,
I don't care for the "2 is more than 1" rule either but generally accept it as "the standard". Along the same lines as some of the ridiculous airline pricing games. All I ask is that you let me know when I'm trying to book so I can reserve a room across the street ifthey don't play that game.
But what really gets me....
A couple of years ago at a Crystal City (Washington DCA) hotel (had to be a Hilton brand but don't recall which one), I was charged $10 over my reserved rate for the "extra person". But the room I booked was specifically for 2 beds !! What did they think I was going to do with that extra bed other than put someone else in it
The desk clerk initially ignored my logic but finally relented when I pulled out my HHonors Diamond card and asked for the manager (gosh how I hate doing that ... but I also hate such silly "nickle-n-dimeing" ).
As far as the principle is concerned, it's the same as a check-in clerk saying "oh, you wanted a bed in the room you reserved ?... that'll be another $30 please"

What's the big deal?
I really don't understand the outrage.
Two people means twice as many towels, twice as much trash, twice as much water usage, twice as much wear and tear on carpet, upholstery, and mattresses, and pillows, twice as much opportunity to break something, etc., etc. And if using two beds (which even couples sometimes do in hotels), twice the sheets and pillows.
Other costs are increased not quite by twice (electricity, TV), and some not at all (like if you use the bed). But clearly, there is an increase of expenses on the hotel's part.
In fact, I wonder if the additional expenses might not be fully covered by the extra charges?
Maybe it's the single traveler who should be outraged -- for paying inflated single rates that subsidize all us couples and families!
(And yes, I did just post in the other thread that I always book for one no matter how many are staying. But that doesn't mean I see the rates as outrageous. I also mentioned tipping generously -- sometimes close to the extra rate amount.)

1) As a customer, why be so forthcoming and honest with # of guests on the reservation?
2) HH Gold get the 2nd guest "free" - example, spouse. Perhaps HH Silver

I'm fairly certain that twice as much water and twice as much trash when we are only talking about two people does not cost the hotel anywhere near $5 or $6 per day, let alone $20. It's not like they have to hire additional staff to collect the extra towels and trash. In fact, the extra water usage (including washing of the extra towels and sheets) is very likely much less than $1 per day.Originally Posted by Rut Dog

At Hampton Inns, where complimentary breakfast is provided, I guess you could argue that there is a few dollars extra cost there. But again, we are probably talking about less than $5. And if they charge extra for this, why don't they drop my rate a few bucks if I opt out of the breakfast?

All HHonors members, regardless of status, receive spouse stays free benefit except at Hampton. See the other thread for more discussion on this:Originally Posted by uastarflyer

"Spouse stays free" is nominally a base-level HHonors benefit (meaning that even Blues who stay fewer than three times a year receive it) - except for Hampton Inn, Hampton Inn & Suites, and all-inclusive hotels.Originally Posted by uastarflyer

I think they may have recently tweaked the Terms to exclude the spouse from package benefits such as a room rate that includes Continental Breakfast.

I know of several of my business travel colleagues who always book two beds for just themselves; they use the other as an extended work-area/place to lay out clothes and stuff. I don't quite get it, but I've heard several people tell me this...Originally Posted by steve64

Add most of the properties in the FLL area. I've been planning a trip and some are $25 difference.Originally Posted by BigJC

Thanks for clarifying. I wasn't aware it extended to "Blue cards", nor that it excluded Hampton. Ignorance was bliss to this HH Gold! Originally Posted by Rut Dog
