OK, I'll be the dummy to post the OBVIOUS question.

Why not just book as one occupant if this silly pricing practice becomes widespread?

How on earth would the average Hilton know if one or two stayed?

Ma and Pa Kettle from the boonies on their annual vacation will never knew there is a price difference so they'll always check "2" guests, but anyone who knows this is occurring will not too often IMHO.

What about in Europe?

Does the spouse stays free apply in Europe as well? One hotel that I recently checked had a difference of 30 euro per night from 1 person to 2 people. My only concern is that if I book it for 1, I'll get one of those very small single rooms that Europe is well known for -- you know, the kind where they take a closet and call it a room?!

Isn't this whole thing kinda silly. When I look at tours and travel packages singles have to pay a supplemental fee if they do not want to share a room. Now Hilton and who know who else wants to charge you a fee to share a room.
A room is a room is a room.
<rant on>And if the companies were really serious about trying to recapture the extra laundry and linen costs they would actually leave the towels when hung up and not change the linens every day according to their "environmentally friendly" fliers. <rant off>

Well, kinda. But I can't take you too seriously.

Single supplements on tour packages are charged because the rates are normally for two people sharing a room. Since the basic room cost is normally split across two occupants the per-person cost of lodging for one person is higher than the per-person cost for two in a room.

The second-occupant charge for a regular hotel room is a different deal. Sometimes it's because breakfast is "included" and the cost of the second occupant's "free" breakfast must be recouped somehow. In other cases I guess it pays for the incremental TP and hot water - I don't know. A charge for a second person isn't really all that much a bigger deal than a charge for a thrid adult in the room - and many more hotels do charge more for three than for two, for whatever reason.
