"Spouse stays free" is nominally a base-level HHonors benefit (meaning that even Blues who stay fewer than three times a year receive it) - except for Hampton Inn, Hampton Inn & Suites, and all-inclusive hotels.

I think they may have recently tweaked the Terms to exclude the spouse from package benefits such as a room rate that includes Continental Breakfast.
